Re: Stock Block

I did the same thing only a little differently but basically for the same reason: to show that a pine block can be fast too! When the race schedule would show only two cars racing I would let one of the Cubs pick one of the cars I built to race against. After a year of doing this they got wise and s...

Re: My Midnight Deuce and a half...

Tou, You stated: "(I think that he either bent or chipped his prop after one of his runs though...I chipped mine later running backwards up the track. )" Can you tell me how well the car ran up the track and where the starting point for it was? I don't have Cub aged boys anymore (them thin...

Re: Best Track

To keep the track feet from slipping on a waxed tile floor we used some 'grip matting' that we found at Wal-Mart in the kitchen section I believe. Its original intent was to be used under a dish drain rack I think.

Re: A new Raingutter Topic.... Qualifying BOX

We made a distinction between the hull and sail in the rules we have used: 1. Boats are to be built from the Official Cub Scout Raingutter Regatta Kits only. Decorations may be added to the boat hull, mast and sail but must not exceed the following specifications: • Hull Length: No longer than 7 inc...

Re: Best Track

A weight option that we use on our home made track is a used 1 gallon milk/water jug filled with water (8 pounds).

Re: PVC Gutter Experience needed

We have been using the 4-inch PVC pipes for several years now and have had no problems. We even built some for the District races and there were no problems there either. We have used table mounted stands/holders in the past but have since built free standing stands (?) for them.

Re: Noisy (whistle) Outlaw car

E-man, I guess that everyone’s derbies are a bit different. I built a car years ago and installed the noise maker that I received in a birthday card. It made a race car sound. Not big and it has to be manually switched on; but it is loud enough to be herd by all. Some of this may have to do with the...

Re: Raingutter Regatta Track Designs

Rainman, We've found that we can fill the 4" PVC 'gutters' right up to the brim without problems. We also keep some extra water on hand to top them back off with should some get blown out. I was able to make a jig to split our PVC and did so with the caps already glued on. With five tracks bein...

Re: Rocket Propelled Pinewood Derby Car

I know of a guy who built an Estes rocket powered car. It ran on a wooden track and did not fly off at all. The track was outdoors when the rocket car was run. I was told that it screamed down the track, off the end, across the parking lot and hit the curb - thereby rendering itself into a million s...

Re: Rocket Propelled Pinewood Derby Car

Now that's cool! I wonder though if we could think of some way of using his PCB to trip some mechanism that would cause a pinewood derby car to flip/stop/fall apart while racing... For years I have been trying to figure a way of building a pinewood derby car that I can race against the Cub Scouts (s...

Re: Weighing the cars ... safely

I used balsa wood to build a four sided box to put the pwd cars on. This is light, sturdy, cheap (I had the balsa on hand), and worked very well. I like the idea of using the clear plastic deli boxes and styrofoam blocks.

Re: Cubmobile Timing

John, Thanks for the offer of the plans - I sent you a pm so you could e-mail me the plans. I looked into this last year and thought that the easiest and most robust way to detect a finish order or time would be to use one of those pressure sensitive mats like are used in stores. You know, the black...

Re: What is BSA legal ???

Stan,

I checked all the kits I have and even some old computer files but did not find any that have the drill + sandpaper but I know that I have seen them. Does anyone have a copy of these they could send to us - purely as a 'sanity check' of course.
