Re: What say the masses?
Tough situation, but in my view an easy call. Stick with the rules. In fairness to all scouts, you should then allow any car to race that would have been otherwise disqualified (with the caveat that a trophy will not be awarded). How would the race be managed if multiple scouts opted to enter illega...

Re: Melting Lead
After the car was shaped, we determined where the weight was to be postioned and took the measurements (ie 1.25in x 0.875in x 0.625"). Then we simply made a form out of 5 small wood blocks (bottom and 4 sides) cut to size and held together w/ drywall screws. Poured the lead in, scraped the top ...

Re: Threaded (tapped) wheels
I've googled 'tapped wheels' and found the following recommendation "Make the wheel lubricate itself. Using right-handed and left-handed taps of the appropriate size, tap the axle hole in each wheel from both sides (one side with the LH tap, one side with the RH tap) 2/3rds of the way through s...

Re: First alignment
When checking alignment using the applet, how far do you let the car roll when determining if a wheel moved in or out? thanks

Doct - by "seriously?" were you refering to oral or pinewood applications...? I was talking the latter, but if you meant the former then that's good to know, too! ;- )

Re: Polish axles...replacement for mothers mag
Thanks for the replies. we're going to 3000 grit on the axles. so maybe the jump from 3000 to a polish might be a leap.

Re: Weight
We usually get the car pretty close, but under, 5 oz. In the bottom or back of the car we'll leave one of two small holes (3/8" dia) that we fill w/ plumbers putty. its cheap and heavy. The tungsten putty would work well, too. if the car is grossly underweight, the holes would be filled w/ lead...

Polish axles...replacement for mothers mag
Would any metal polsih be better than none if we don't have mother's mag on hand? We have some silver polish and stainless steel polish/cleaner. Are there other household substitutes we should look for?? And, on the topic of polishing, whitening toothpaste for the the wheel bore, right? should anyth...

Re: Tapering Axle Heads
We have pretty average-to-strict rules, but there is never any inspection except does the car weigh less than 5 oz does it fit in a box of A x B x C inches does it straddle a mock track (ie the 3/8" clearance) The other rules are never checked (alter wheels, alter axles, use liquid lube, ebay c...

Thanks folks....since the car isn't painted yet, we'll opt for the toothpick route.

Ack...forgot to lift the 4th wheel...how to correct
We purposely purchased the Pro Body Tool to lift the front wheel. Regretably, while drilling holes, we forgot to use the 3rd hole in the PBT and now have 4 on the floor. How should we correct this? I would think, filling the hole and redrilling just above it might not be strong enough? Should we dri...

Re: Wheel Prep When You're Not Allowed to Prep
Last year, our rules were changed to include the extended wheelbase b/c the kids were at a disadvantage at the districts.
Not to steal the thread, but in regard to molding marks on the tread, if the mark is a hole (not a protrusion), should the tread be sanded to the depth of the hole???
thanks

"When we did Space Derby in October, my son's rocket did poorly since one of the rubber bands came off the internal hook, unbeknownst to us. I keep having these horrible feelings that we are going to get to the Pinewood Derby this weekend and my son's car is going to do poorly for some reason. ...
