Re: Plan for race day

Give yourself time to test out the lines to make sure they are running fair. Setup another activity or so because this loses interest just watching. Have setup area where you have multiple winders. Have a repair area manned by one or two adults. Get good soft blankets by the end so if they pop off t...

Re: Making a VW Beetle

I'm going to make a better one just for the fun of it, maybe during this summer with the kids. The 1st one was rushed and quite a bit was done the night before. We weren't even sure if the thing could be built! The baking in the oven caused the wood putty to bubble and crack which pretty much ruine...

Re: Making a VW Beetle

I built one a few weeks ago for our adult division. It's a first attempt and could be done much better next time. I didn't even know about the existence of this forum until a couple of days ago. It won first place last week. I'm learning to upload photos and will post one soon. What happened to the...

Re: RA Gliders

RA's have a glider kit kind of similar to the space derby kit. It looks like it has wings instead of fins. Does anyone have any tips on building these?? Never seen one of those. I would imagine the same basic principles apply. Thin your body down as much as possible but still survive the end stop, ...

Re: More ebay Fun

Don't think Ebay will be caring if they violate the spirit of the rules for a pinewood derby. Think they have more important things to do, like people illegally selling software. Don't get me wrong, I don't approve of people buying premade cars. Think Ebay just won't care about something like this....

Re: More ebay Fun

Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT defending these guys selling cars on Ebay, but what they are doing does not violate any state or federal law. Unethical, you bet, but I wouldn't use illegal to describe it. It's not neccesary for an object to violate a fed or state law for E-Bay to refuse it's listing. T...

Re: Pics with Start Ramp and Racing

Do you have more details how your event was setup? I would really like to propose for next year we add some of the categories you describe, they sound like a LOT of fun! BTW, do you have a map of how your course was setup? Did you use cones? If the kids could drive it OK, I think it would be safer ...

Re: Pics with Start Ramp and Racing

That's exactly how our cars were... steered via feet. However, the ability to control the cars was usually too tough for most kids (they'd lose control just as they left the starting ramp, they'd lean, and ironically if you push to upright your body you are usually steering yourself harder in the d...

Re: Pics with Start Ramp and Racing

A race course that requires good steering would have been impossible for the largest majority of the cars that showed up to our race... most had severely restricted steering, I think a couple had none... they of course ran into the crowd... Terry Our cubs made the car so their feet directly contact...

Re: Pics with Start Ramp and Racing

You don't have to run them down a ramp. You can just have fellow scouts push them. I have wondered about this (new to Cubmobile this year)... the "rules" we got from the handbook and Pack showed 2 different types of Cubmobile. One was (I assume) a dedicated gravity-racer style, no pushbar. The othe...
