Re: Tungston canopy and stability
We have used the canopy sideways instead of long ways with good success at pack level. If you need to bang out a car quick it is a very fast way to build the chassis. I don't know negative or positive with the COG being higher. The canopy does gives you excellent concentration of weight. Pretty much...

Re: Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
Local hobby store had four sets on the shelve and they were all mold #3.
The hobby store owner told me that they sold a bunch of them. I mentioned to him that they were actually illegal by the rules for our district. He was surprised. Hope no kids are turned back at check in based on this.

Re: How many cars have you built?
I built 1 with my father when I was a kid. It was the block, I don't believe we cut anything. I know we did not paint. We did put some stickers on it. We had lost one of the axles and my dad found a replacement nail. It was the slowest car in the pack race. My wife feels this experience caused a sca...

There are different kids of Mother's. Which I believe have different characteristics. So this might be driving the difference.

Re: Lathe work
For Pinewood derby work I would recommend the Taig. It a small lathe but the size makes working on axles and wheels the ideal size.

Re: Do Rules Help?
FatSebastian no you are correct I had not mentioned reaming bores. I brought reaming bores into the conversation because I viewed this as more significant than truing and also viewed it as more difficult to perform well. But this is considering how we use to do it on lathe and I did see Stan's new a...

Re: Poll question
You will get benefit rail riding without a track. But you could get more benefit with a track and the ability to tweak. You will get the most benefit if you have access to the actual track you will be competing on. We have never had the last benefit. It is possible to have a track, optimize through ...

Re: Do Rules Help?
I don't believe the MaxV wheels have had the bore reamed. I took what MaxV/DerbyWorx did with the 4090 was minimal and possible for a scout to do themselves. But I honestly don't know the details of what is done to these wheels. I believe that a well prepared car with wheels that are picked carefull...

Re: Do Rules Help?
Great thread and enjoying the discussion. The fundamental aspect of Pinewood derby that has made it so enjoyable for me and my boys over the last 13+ years is also what also causes the black eye of pinewood derby and a feeling of many that people are cheating. There is an attempt to manage it throug...

Re: What does this rule mean?
These are pretty typical rules and my interpretation would be that rail riding would be fine. Rail riding can be done in a variety of different ways including just not straightning the axle and use the bend that is naturally there but direct it so it cause the car to turn in the desired direction.

Re: Hello, new member
In most cases if you are over weight you drill some holes into the wood. But with your car there does not look to be anyplace where you could drill a hole. I guess between the front wheels there might be some wood. The hole does not usually go all the way through and is done from the bottom. We shoo...

Re: Arrrrrrrg! Why do we do it!
I can not tell you how many times we have been there. But usually after we get some time back we start an entire new cycle trying to understand why is it better. It is a mind set that is helpful throughout life, or can be a curse. Something I would like my boys to pick up. This is especially true fo...

Re: turning axles on a mini lathe?
I also use the Taig exclusively for PWD. We use it for wheel alignment, I purchased a second motor and have it configured with two heads. Rules state axles must be mounted parallel to track and this does basically a perfect job every time. Plus it is really easy for the kids to do it. All holes dril...

Re: turning axles on a mini lathe?
Is the mini-lathe a Taig? We have done ours for years on the Taig and it is pretty straight forward. If it is a Taig I can tell you the part number you need to hold the nail when I get home.
