Walnut Wonder
A new approach to building a pinewood derby car, local lumber. An unexpected surprise from a storm during the spring of 2013, a Walnut tree was toppled over in a neighbors yard. The house is located in a part of North Atlanta where Walnut trees are rare. The amount of character in the grain is uniqu...

Re: Butternut WIP
Whodathunkit, to date I have not used finishes for the natural wood cars other than the Minwax fast-drying polyurethane. Although other types of finishes have been considered. For the salad bowl finish what is the brand you would recommend? A hobby lumber supplier mentioned Butternut being a wood wi...

Re: Hardwood Derby Cars
All the light colored wood is Basswood. During the laminating process the center piece between the two Walnut pieces appeared to be close in color. Only after shaping the body did the difference in color of lighter Basswood become noticeable with wider pieces. Thank you for comment.

I may have a block of wood (shaped car body) available to donate if you are interested for the 2013 Mid America Derby Race.

Re: A sneak peek at the 28 Ford Woodie Wagon.
Mark, The 1929 Muscle Machine 1929 Ford Truck is a nice build. Some of the cars and trucks that I am currently constructing have days of research prior to cutting the first piece of wood. One car that we are working on is from the mid 50's, a British Sports car. I started research for this project b...

Whodathunkit,
An extreme amount of detail on this 1928 Ford Woodie Wagon! I can only imagine the amount of time to research, construct, and paint a car like this would be several hours.

All three cars are nice builds. The ficticious Redbull X1 car from Grand Turismo 5 appears to be a complex car to construct.

Re: 2012 Realistic Car Division
Sporty thank you for the comment. Mark the inner part of the front fenders are the center/core of the body. To get the desired appearance for a car it may take several attempts with cutting, fitting, and shaping of wood pieces. I have quiet a collection of cars and trucks that did not work. This pho...

2012 Realistic Car Division
With 2012 about to reach the mid-point we have three project cars under construction. Photos below are of cars that were constructed for the realistic division during the past ten years. A considerable time went into the research of each of these two cars to scale wheel base, track clearance, and ov...

Re: Band saw blade poll
Mark, The thin kerf of the Timber Wolf blade is excellent for this type of woodwork. In earlier years I was involved in cutting out shapes for projects with materials such as acrylic, aluminum, Brass, Copper, hardwoods, plywood, sheet metal, and stainless steel. The company had three bandsaw sizes: ...

Re: Band saw blade poll
The 3/16" width blade provides smooth cutting of curves and shapes in 1/8" to 3/4" thick wood stock. Fender pieces are 3/8" thick wood stock. When cutting thin wood stock like 1/16" thick aircraft plywood (center section of body) a 1/8" thick sacrafice board is used to ...
