Re: Free Templates to Create and Use at Your Workshops
Thanks Nitro! I haven't been on here in awhile, but I was out poking around looking for new templates to use this year...that adds a fantastic new selection to my set. I run workshops for about 15 packs in central ohio (100-150 boys per year for the last 7 years). For boys who come every year this w...

Re: Race into Scouting logo
For anyone who is interested I found some nice images
Google: race cub scouting logo and look at the images tab.
I was originally searching on Race into Scouting....results not so good there.

Re: Race into Scouting logo
We (meaning the pack) usually get a CD with all this stuff on it at the beginning of the year from council. Our CM tends to lose this sort of thing if I don't get them from him at the beginning of the year.
I am hoping someone out there has it and can send it to me.

Re: Getting off the line
Ok. Racing with standard rules that say you can't modify the wheels what can we do? Wheel Weight: Not much can be done here Wheel Diameter: Again not much can be done..Which is better, bigger or smaller? axle/wheelbore finish: I feel like my son does a great job of polishing the axles..Wheel bores s...

Re: No Lowe's Derby Design Contest? What is Chevrolet doing
The Chevrolet sponsership is a BSA thing I think. Somebody had to pay for all those car kits and carrying cases they handed out this year. As far as I know the Lowes/Dremel contest is not BSA related. I could be wrong. I went out to their site a couple weeks ago. They are still displaying the 2005 w...

Planning this years workshops
Well, Its that time of year again. Time to get my shop cub proofed and ready for derby workshops! Last year was pretty successful. I hosted cubs from 3 different packs. Total out come last year: 6 first in den. 4 second in den. 3 first in pack (and my son wasn't one of those). 2 second in pack. Firs...

Re: Groups, Subgroups, and Racing
Landy,
Thats a really cool idea! Team racing could be a really good way for a Pack with overzealous parents to still have a fun derby. I will have to keep that one in mind.
Thanks!

Thanks for that link! I love the Victory cups they have on their homepage. Those are very slick. Their price for medals is cheaper than crown...and I like their design better too!

Re: Stan...A case study for you.
Absolutely correct Stan! In fact, when parents ask me where the weight goes I explain to them that on a "Standard" track the weight should go to the rear, but on our track it isn't as big an advantage. That said, I still tell them to put it towards the rear. The benefits may not be as big....

Re: Stan...A case study for you.
Does this track have about 80-% on a long straight slope, a short curved transition, and final 20-% flat? Yes...exactly. And in many of these races you could have put a straight edge across the front of the cars at the bottom of the slope. On long slope like we have it has been my experience that y...

Re: Stan...A case study for you.
Track: Very smooth wooden track 40' from Start pin to finish line. dropping 5' over 32' with an 8' flat Vertical CM : relationship between CM and the plane of the axles. I am sure his forward alignment was spot on. Backward alignment was obviously good too. What I find most compelling about this is ...

Re: Stan...A case study for you.
Den Leader, If you read back through some older posts about weight placement you will find a very compelling argument for a High CM in relation to the plane of the axles. In short a High CM travels a shorter distance than a low CM. Turning the car around did not change the vertical location of the C...

Stan...A case study for you.
Our pack race this year included an entry whose performance supports Stan's High CM argument. The young man in question built a truck. For weight he used a spark plug proped up in the bed with the heavy end on top of the cab. First race he did awful. Next race he ran it backwards. This moved his CM ...
