Re: 2017 car 1974 AMC Javelin

Nice work, really like the boxes too... which no doubt leads to people looking at them on display thinking, oh look that guy cheated by using a model, LOL - gotta love those people. We had a father-son team build matching cars one year. They bought the same plastic model kits, but used them very di...

Re: moral/ethics dilemma

For our All Comers class, we've had either separate design awards for adults and for youth, or design awards only for youth and none for adults. But we have only one set of speed awards, and any adults and youth in the All Comers class compete against each other.

Re: moral/ethics dilemma

Have you considered separate open classes for youth and for adults?

Re: Getting more Scout Races to support oil as a legal lubricant

I don't know about "most places", but we've never restricted lubricants, as long as it isn't applied excessively so that it causes a mess. But about 10 years ago, we switched from providing graphite at our workshops to providing Krytox at our workshops. But the motivation was more to eliminate the g...

Re: Inquiry into the use of spoilers to increase speed

The analysis I heard is that derby cars don't want spoilers (or anything else) that pushes them into the track (which is the role of spoilers on real race cars, to increase traction aka friction). And any spoiler that could lift the car would generate more aerodynamic drag than the reduced friction ...

Re: What group do you race with?

Peninsula Bible Church Palo Alto holds an annual Shape N Race Derby. Originally, it was just for CSB Stockade members (3rd-6th grade boys). Now, it's for CSB Stockade, CSB Treeclimbers (1st-2nd grade boys and their dads), and Pioneer Clubs (girls, and 4-5 year old boys). Technically, Pioneer Clubs ...

You're welcome.

Honestly, we spend more effort running the workshops than we do running the derby itself. And I think that's the right balance. The point isn't to race wooden cars down an inclined track. The point is to promote adult-child interaction.

Bingo. The point is to facilitate adult-child interaction.

If some kids are at a disadvantage, then we'll make resources (including adult volunteers) available to them at our workshops.

Why indeed?

Why not just have some adult build a bunch of identical cars in a workshop, and assign them randomly to the kids when they show up for the race?

Let's forget for a moment the Best Design category. Why then would a rule be made that would allow an extended wheelbase? Let's forget for a moment the Best Design category. Re: Opinions of the group

Oil ? Now that's a problem and I don't know how it can be solved. Can be solved easily. Mid-America has the answer. IMHO, the Four Peaks District and the Thunderbird District (among others) have a much better answer. Allow any and all lubricants, as long as no residue leaves the car or is deposited...

Re: wheel source

There are some things I'd change about the NSC rules. For one thing, we don't use BSA kits, so all the rules about BSA wheels would need to be updated. For another, our start gate works with pointed-nose cars (although we advise at least a half-inch flat part in the middle to trigger the finish gate...

Re: The Big Day

Maybe it would be fair if its on a newer track but those old ones, ive read plenty about track bias. There shouldn't be any unfairness caused by track bias if each car races the same number of times in each lane, even if each car races only once in each lane. And my take is that yes, the motivation...

Re: The Big Day

All heats but one seemed reasonably close. One of them had all four cars with times in the 1.2 second range and it shocked me that no one said anything about it. Yep. That's the risk with time-only races. My concern isn't with the extreme variations like this, where a single race had times that wer...

Re: The Big Day

I had never seen it done this way, but all racers got four heats at random, each time in a different lane. Head-to-head races didn't matter so much as the computer system simply took all four heats and averaged out the times. The final results were based on the four-race average. Has anyone else ev...
