Re: Outer Hub Step Removal Tool
Stan - ideally you would have a slight cone vice a flat outer hub - with a very slight lip in the center to stabilize the wheel. I'm not sure how to modify your tool to do that but if you put a bevel on the cutting edge it would make the cone. Then if you had a flat one you could cut the top of the...

Our Council Rules - Pretty Loose?
Our council race rules are out again... and are pretty loose, empasizing creativity. Got to say I like that. It's a pay-to-race field - any scout can enter for $5 to cover basic costs. My oldest wants to make a car for speed and go out with a bang... I see a lot of possibilities! 2012 Rules All cars...

Car -and- Driver photos in GPRM/DMV?
If this isn't already possible some way, our after-action review of this year's (wildly successful) PWD yielded one request for Randy/GrandPrix Software: We'd like to see another data field to allow us to take and store pictures not only of the racers, but also their cars, please! During the racing,...

Re: Max efficiency on Race Day
Jumping on here - similar question. How about the situation when we've got the roster pre-defined in GPRM and DMV? E.g.: The check-in station takes pictures using DMV using a different PC... we walk the file over to the race computer, put the images in the same location... is there a way to automati...

Re: Adding a Friction Brake to an Old Track
I'm late to the party, but here's a picture of the new stop section I designed and built for an older track last year: http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/164818_1655361621773_1169063719_31490507_5842984_n.jpg The track used to have a ramp-style section with foam tape on it, but was entir...

Re: Smokey and the Bandit pinewood derby semi truck
Good ideas seldom occur to only one person at a time... it's a question of who builds it first. Glad to have an example to start from. My biggest worry is/was getting sufficiently high resolution trailer mural art to print good decals! I am glad to see that someone else made it... and that...

Our 2012 Pack Cars
This year was a bit hectic, but a great PWD experience for all... a brand-new 42' BestTrack, some new additions to the race crew, and no race-day drama (pre-empted by the crew and better planning), and more for the kids to do made for a great day. We're taking our track on the road to another pack a...

Slow Race?
Here's an idea we've kicked around a bit - for an open class with a twist, some of us have had an idea to have a "slow race"... literally challenge the adults to build the slowest car possible that still crosses the finish line unassisted. Has anyone else held a similar race? Or built a ca...

Start Gate/Ramp Plans?
A mad scientist (literally!, but only when he's upset, which is rare...) den leader, me (CC), and two energetic cubmasters are working on holding our own inaugural cubmobile derby this spring - only open to dens from our two sister packs this year. I've not seen any links to plans or examples of sta...

Re: How do you keep / get graphite off the paint job??
We've also had good success with lacquers. Now that your boys have some experience with the airbrush, you could move up to solvent-based paint. Lacquer is nice because it can be dissolved by lacquer thinner even if it dries in the airbrush, plus it dries incredibly fast, so doesn't have time to pick...

Interest in an Inaugural Cubmobile Event - Tips?
Well, my Cubmaster (I'm the Chair) brought this up earlier this fall, and I think it's a great idea. Our chartered org (our parish) and the local sheriff close the road next to our church every May for a 5k as part of their spring festival. The idea is to piggyback on the 5k, coordinate to keep the ...

Re: Inexpensive Paint Booths
Here's a booth I made last year out of an old moving wardrobe box, my removable shop vac motor/blower, a trouble light, a spare furnace filter... and of course... duct tape. Basically... it was free, and works like a charm. It's vented up an old, unused chimney flue, and puts a nice plume of steam o...

Guys, this is absolutely beautiful work! I can't say I could design the circuits you have, but I can sure build them... thanks for making this available to everyone! I recently crafted a game show lockout buzzer system for my office's fall party using Easy buttons for contestant switches. I'm going ...

Re: how much weight do you allow for primer, paint and clear?
I second, third, or whatever the recommendations above... it really depends on the type of paint you use. We usually use a coat or two of sanding sealer, two-three coats of primer (first one thicker, others thin), and some body putty. I've settled (again) on using lacquers for the finish coats - the...
