Re: Teflon Theory v. Practice

Sebastian caught me on another topic and asked me if I had any follow up on the experiments I tried after talking to the German tribologist. Sporty already tipped my hand a bit, because I was working on getting a sample of BAM. Unfortunately, it's not easy to come by, so I never did get a sample. I ...

Re: Applying my PWD experience to a robot

Sorry for the delay in responding. I was having fun with my son at the Kentucky Centennial Jamboree this past weekend. (they had a 100 yd PWD track: http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20101016/NEWS01/310160050/1008/Extended+Pinewood+Derby+track+helps+Boy+Scouts+celebrate+centennial For my projec...

Applying my PWD experience to a robot

Greetings all! It's good to have a reason to chat with you again, even if it isn't PWD related. I'm taking courses at my university, and we just received our class project: a simple robot that will follow a curving white line. Extra points will be given to the fastest two robots. I'm turning to your...

Very PO'd

After finishing 2nd at our pack race in March, my son won't be competing in our district race because no body bothered to tell us it was last weekend! This is all in spite of multiple unreturned email asking about the race to everyone from the den leader to the DE!

I'm fumming! :burningmad:

Re: Teflon Theory v. Practice

Okay, I've been chatting with a German tribologist, who seems to be very knowledgable on the subject. He confirmed that, if improperly applied, teflon will slow a pinewood derby car down. Teflon doesn't stick to anything well, except itself. The accumulation of the loose powdered teflon builds up an...

Re: Relubrication during competition

MHO: No re-lube. One of my memories from my cub days was one of the scouts dropping their car and cracking a wheel as they were waiting to check in. That's why I have my 3rd through 6th fastest wheels and axles pre-lubricated, broken in, and in my kit. I keep them attached to a small block of pine. ...

Teflon Theory v. Practice

Okay, lots of people saying that teflon is a big no-no. Stan has even published test results that show that the "white powder of death" makes a car run slower. It's the perfect example of theory not meshing with practice. But, darn my luck, while explaining CoF to my son, I showed him a ta...

Some neat little apps. You'll need the Mathmatica player, but it's a free download.

Re: Keeping the drama out of the derby.

FS- I agree with you. I'd like to add that well defined rules explain who is responsible for deciding whether or not a rule has been violated, what the penalties are for violations, and wether or not a ruling can be appealed. For instance, if the rule is "lubricants can be used, but must not fo...

Re: Keeping the drama out of the derby.

Darin- It could help a couple of different ways. First, helps keep one incident from disrupting an entire event. In another thread a director was lamenting that, at the end of an event, one of the dads was complaining that one of the times in an early heat were wrong. Of course, the dad didn't compl...

Keeping the drama out of the derby.

Reading through the threads, it's easy to see that the "drama" that inevitably comes with competition can kill PWD events. The bickering, arguing, and outright fighting that can occur has caused some councils, districts, or packs to stop holding events. No one wants the drama, but how do y...

Re: District and Council Derbies do not meet the purpose?

The DE that I talked to said that they only occassionaly do a district derby, never a council one because it does not meet the purpose of the pinewood derby in BSA? I am wondering if any of you can shed any light on that line of thought for me. It sounds to me like they've had too much "drama&...

Re: A Hub-Axle Treatment Evaluation Protocol

Stan, I think your testing apparatus fails to account for centripetal acceleration. As the car travels through the curve of the track, the force on the axles is greater than the weight of the car. Sometimes as much as 3 or 4 times the weight of the car. The sharper the curve, the greater the force. ...

Re: Tyler Wins Tiger Class at District

Congrats! I like the trophy you got better. It lets you sow of the car. We'll have to build or by a stand for my son's car. I try to read everything Stan Pope Me too. Stan is destined to go down in history as the patron saint of the Pinewood Derby. Sebastian, and Max, and a lot of others on ...
