Re: Krytox's life span?

Question: if a car is lubed with Krytox and tuned on a Saturday night (5 runs since the most recently application of Krytox), will it be OK to run in a Pinewood Derby (for a maximum of 8 runs) on the following Saturday, or should the car be re-lubed prior to the actual Pinewood Derby? We've been us...

Re: Generally speaking: grooved or not for oil? Graphite?

So, do any vendors offer BSA axles with grooves? Thanks.

Rail riding on non-DFW?

I saw a video recently that looked like the car was rail-riding, but on the non-DFW. Have I not been paying attention? Is this something new, or proven to work, or ??? I would expect that there is some discussion about this topic already - but I can't find it.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: RaceReplay w/ USB 3.0 cameras

Randy, is there any provision in RaceReply for using an IP camera, since USB cable length is so limited? Thanks.

Re: Start Gate

Is this sufficient to trigger the start gate for a 3 lane Best Track? Just placed the order for a new one and want to be able to add remote start gate for Pack races. Thank you, This start gate worked fine for our 4 lane Best Track, although I would definitely recommend upgrading the solenoid. The ...

Re: BSA axles vs. plated oversized axles?

We would never, ever , tear down a car. I also would not discuss an illegal car in front of anyone except the adult involved. I suspect no one else would either. I think this is the route we are going to have to take, instead of potentially looking like sore sports (did I mention that this Scout's ...

Re: BSA axles vs. plated oversized axles?

TiminOhio is trying to determine if an axle is illegal under their rules. If they do not have a rule that axles must be visible and the slots are filled with Bondo then all the inspector is able to inspect is the axle head. If the head is painted it will distort the dome and even a shine will be hi...

Re: BSA axles vs. plated oversized axles?

I'd like to clarify something. On November 16 I stated we do not have a rule regarding paint on the axle. On November 18 I stated we are not allowed paint on the axle. On November 17 there was a PWD District meeting with the new District Executive and the new leader of the District PWD. "No pa...

Without an (undesirable) teardown rule, slipping a usual caliper on the axle would not be possible. However, a pair of thin GO/NOGO diameter gages that would slip between hub and car body would tell the tale.
Thanks Stan! I will have to look into that.

Re: BSA axles vs. plated oversized axles?

A nickel plated axle and stainless steel axle will be much more shiny then a zinc plated axle. That is what tipped me off initially. The axles in question "look" much more shiny than any BSA axle I have ever seen. Other than "it looks shinier than every other axle here," any sug...

Re: BSA axles vs. plated oversized axles?

Dr. John Jobe, Physics Lecture 3 - Experiments with Hodges' Nickel Plated Axles. On an Incline Plane track with a 36' horizontal run, Hodges Nickel Plated axles will beat a zinc coated axle by a full car length. You can read the whole complicated story about the test by going to Winderby.com and cl...

Re: BSA axles vs. plated oversized axles?

My experience thus far is that oversized axles are faster and lead to fewer wiggles. I completely agree with you and that is absolutely my expierence as well. There seems to be consensus that oversized axles provide measurable benefit. Tim's original question asks "how much advantage" und...

Re: BSA axles vs. plated oversized axles?

If your rules allow I would definitely use them. That's the problem: our rules do not allow any axles besides BSA axles, and after some conversations and brief inspection of one particular car, I strongly suspect that he is running something other than BSA axles, such as plated (or stainless) axles...

BSA axles vs. plated oversized axles?

With everything else being equal, on a 42' Best Track, using graphite only, how much advantage would be gained by using either plated (i.e. nickel-plated) or both plated and over-sized axles, as compared to using BSA axles, even if they were polished and prepped? Thanks for any info that anyone may ...
