Re: Lasers as better finish-line emitters?

Namely, how most timers are affected by large amounts of ambient light. Sunlight, camera flashes, etc, seem to have the potential to oversaturate the light sensors and prevent them from detecting when a car has crossed the finish line. I always knew this was an issue but I was still amazed when I w...

Re: Yet another Arduino based track timer...

Had a GPRM user that was running into trouble using the software with your timer. I did notice that the GPRM settings on your website list a Retrieve Data command. That command is not necessary if the timer will send the results to the computer automatically after the heat is over. I had the user r...

Re: Yet another Arduino based track timer...

Very cool! I also heard you were onhand to help with the Guinness Book world record attempt, so props for that too! Thanks! It was a lot of fun to be involved in that effort. Here's a picture of the timer I built for them: http://www.miscjunk.org/mj/images/pdt_WRPDT_2.jpg A few interesting notes of...

Re: Yet another Arduino based track timer...

Hello all, It took longer than expected but I've finally finished a huge update to the PDT - I'm calling it the Halloween update. :D Over the last couple of years there have been numerous custom configurations that I've helped people with and I've finally added the best of them as general configurat...

Re: Be part of History - in setting the World Record !!!

Do you know if the risk has been checked out? Sounds like it would take more than a few minutes to rectify if not discovered until after the first test run on race day! Hi Stan - sorry for the delayed response. Greg had asked me to build a customized version of my Arduino based timer to use on thei...

Re: Be part of History - in setting the World Record !!!

What about the voltage drop on the wire from start gate to finish line? Might also be waveform distortion. 2000 ft of wire could be an issue. Or has this been tested and proven okay... no "repeaters" required along the pathway? The voltage drop isn't an issue. 2000' feet of wire has a res...

Re: Automated Car Photo Capture

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. I have a Raspberry Pi but I haven't done much with it - I should give this a try.

How well does the small lightbox work? I've been thinking about getting one. Do you have a car photo you can share?

Thanks,
David

Re: Yet another Arduino based track timer...

Hello all, Over the last couple of months I've been doing a major update of the PDT website's content, specifically on the following sections: Construction - covers timer bridge, circuits, displays, etc. Software setup - covers configuring & upload of timer software, interfacing to PC software, ...

Re: Yet another Arduino based track timer...

My question is: how do you protect the IR receiver? What type of track do you have? For a BestTrack track and I'm assuming most metal tracks the method shown on the PDT construction page should work pretty well (scroll down to the emitters/detectors section): http://www.miscjunk.org/mj/pg_pdt_info1...

Re: Yet another Arduino based track timer...

Hello all, With local Radio Shacks getting fewer and farther between for most people I've been getting questions regarding alternate emitter/detector components for building the timer. If anyone has built the timer using non-Radio Shack components for the lane emitters/detectors can you please reply...

Re: Yet another Arduino based track timer...

Is there an easy implementation for a single 7-digit display per lane? For my purposes, I don't really need the times displayed. I don't know of any single digit 7-segment LEDs pre-made with the controller board like the Adafruit displays. Depending on how many lanes you have it would be pretty sim...

Re: Yet another Arduino based track timer...

If I am understanding things correctly, these displays are supposed to daisy chain off of each other. So, I am trying to think how to easily connect these together without a bunch of wire splicing. Yes they can be daisy chained together or since the displays are close to one another you could utili...
