Thank you to Derby Talk!

Well, my son has now finished his PWD career by winning his pack championship again this year and extending his win streak to 4 years in a row!! After a first year finish where we were always leading the race until the last section of the track where we slowed down and ended up losing, we came here ...

Re: Derby Wheel Neckerchief Slides

My son and I have had a lot of fun with the Pinewood Derby and been pretty successful at it too (we're going for Pack Champion four years in a row on Saturday). Much of the success has been trying to learn from all the experts on this site. We decided to give back and absolutely "stole" th...

Re: Rattling car

The only thing I can think of is tungsten cubes in a loose weight pocket. We had a car like that 2 years ago where I routed the weight pockets with a 1/4" bit and it left a rounded edge on the side and was also a little too deep. So, as you handled the car, the tungsten would clank together, b...

Re: My favorite pic from this year's Pack Race

These are some of the cars we raced at our Pack Derby this year. This one is my car and the cars of three of my sons. Green w/ black wheels (closest) my car. Blue w/ yellow wheels (2nd closest) 8 year old Bear son's car. Orange w/ blue wheels (3rd) 10 year old Webelos I son's car. Orange w/ red whe...

Re: Adhesive vinyl -for underbody

I've only tried some aluminum foil tape that I found at Home Depot. Some say it is strong enough to not have to glue your weight in, simply tape over it. Haven't tried that yet, but it does seem to work well. It does add some weight though. Don't know what brand it is. birddog Yep. HCAV aluminum ta...

Re: First teardown and best way to get epoxy off tungsten??

This is a bit off topic, but I would not use epoxy in the first place, if you wish to reuse the weights. I'd use hot glue instead. It is easier to pull out the weights without destroying the car and removing the glue from the weights themselves is not hard. Was thinking what other options we may ha...

We try to find the simplest shape we can so that we don't destroy the car when we build it!!

Re: Moving away from 4 on the floor

Well, at least it seems we have learned by reading here! :D So it seems we have a path to a faster car. Any idea on what he time gain might be for each of these? I know there are a lot of factors affecting time but just wondering what would be the gains for each of these.

Moving away from 4 on the floor

My son has been successful over the last two years winning the pack championship with our four on the floor design but has said he would like to see if we can go faster (of course). We have used a wedge about 1/2" thick with an hourglass shape to remove wood and allow for more tungsten. The tun...

Re: Cutting your own pine blocks?

The problem with the branding iron is that not all kits are made equal. I bought 3 kits earlier this year. The lightest block was 85ish grams and the heaviest was 151 grams. I just bought another kit to build a car but this time I took the scale to the scout store. Sure, they looked at me like I wa...

Re: Physics and the Pinewood Derby DVD Giveaway (2013)

Just wanted to say that the video was our first introduction to many of the physics of the pinewood derby and has helped gain a great understanding of what is important in building our cars. We still review it every year to remind us of the importance of a number of items...although we don't do the ...

Re: Alignment, Axle wholes. Drilling / Cant. (Pictures).

In looking at the instructions, while it says to attach the rod, I do not see what the diameter of the rod is....did I miss it? depends on what cant you want and which side of the block you use it on. See Stan's calculator page. Is there a recommended amount of cant based on your experience? I keep...
