Re: Mass-Producing Lead Weights for Scout Use?

You Pou a second board with a hole (mounting stud) on the board that is the negative of the canopy and you get a nice 2 piece mold.

Re: Mass-Producing Lead Weights for Scout Use?

I make weights 3 ways. - One is exactly like Darin suggests. Drill holes in a 2x4 for the size of slug you want and fill the holes with molten lead... and bang out the slug after it cools off. - Second method is to route a series of grooves usually 1/4"x1/4"X2" in a 2x4. This size slu...

Our pack has 5 of these and we've got nothing negative to say about them.

Re: How long do your wheels spin?

Thorne's book is really good. It's sort of like getting the Cliff's Notes for this message board. After you read it... look up "lemon Pledge trick" on this board for the last piece of the puzzle for fast graphite cars.

If you're going to go through the trouble of making a version of the tool... you might as well just put the wheels on the lathe while you're there... right?

Re: Geetting COM Under 1/2" ???

Speedster... we didn't do well in our pack race this year. The kids in my den took 8 of top 10 spots... but the result was my sons were 7th and 9th place overall.... very disappointing. We built new cars before districts (younger son was 2nd in rank so qualified automatically) and older son (as past...

If you don't mind... one additional question:

How do you drill (bullet / block / other)?

Re: Our cars for 2015 (Update:New cars and District results)

We had districts this week and my sons came back strong winning their ranks (Webelos and Wolf) and taking 1st and 2nd in the overall cub scout and all BSA (including boy scouts) races. This was redemption after the disappointing pack race. Only one person from my older sons den showed up so he was a...

Re: Our cars for 2015

The rules changed at the district level and we try to keep the pack rules the same so people don't have to modify or build new cars. I don't think anyone ran light wheels. I was part of the inspection team and gave the wheel inspector lots of examples of mods to compare with so hopefully none slippe...

Re: Our cars for 2015

How do you feel about the spoon cars ? The design and shape. You pleasedo with them ? Sporty the spoon is awesome. I think that once you understand the key design principles of PWD cars you can make any shape/style reasonably fast... but the spoon is something that is very achievable with minimal t...

Re: Our cars for 2015

My sons are ticked-off at me for giving my den so much help and information. They were all screaming fast... most using blocks I drilled, all using axel/wheel polishing materials we provided, and half with bodies cut in our workshop. I was trying to show them that you should freely help others and e...

Re: Devising a test to catch instability

Good ideas... but we have a 24' test track we built. The track is to "traditional" cub scout PWD track specifications. We just don't have that last 8' of run-out. Well... we can tell you that our cars didn't show signs of wiggles on the test track, but when we went to race on a 42' Best tr...

Re: Our cars for 2015

Yep that's a car I built in the early 80's with my father. They had a vintage car class this year. I should've guessed that the guy who suggested it had a good car he wanted to pull out... his car was scream'n fast... his son's car... not so much.
