Re: Fender Notch's.

With balsa, you could rig up a sanding block with coarse grit sandpaper (e.g., 80 grit) glued onto a wood block template/fence, and make quick work of sanding your notches down without having to use any power tools. I've clamped custom sanding blocks into my woodworking vise, and had the boys rub th...

I have to agree. The build is really solid, and the paint job looks professional. Great work!

Re: Help moving com back

Agreed with the previous post. We have built Hershey bar chassis cars before, with a balsa superstructure on top, and we won both design and speed categories. And if he's going for design, don't worry about the COM on a 3.2 ounce chassis car. Put what you can as far back as you can, and explain why ...

Re: Help moving com back

If the unweighted car is 3.2 oz., does that also include your wheels and axles? I do not know what the car looks like, so cannot really offer up too much in the way of really targeted advice. If you can post a pic. or two of the car (including a pic. of the underneath of the car, that would help wit...

I don't see how the car's design could've been any better. Amazing job!

Re: Dawes Family Cars for 2016

Thanks!

Without a track to tune on, these wouldn't be worth my time or money. I'm working on tenths and hundredths of a second. That much money for several thousandths? No thanks.

Re: Maximum speed a car can reach.

I'll gladly participate. But since we don't have a track of our own to tune on before sending it in, I suspect it won't be as fast as some. Are your TBD rules for graphite or oil? I would be interested in both, as we have never run on oil, but would be interested to see how they would run with oil....

Re: How would you handle this?

Our Pack has a graphite only rule specifically because the folks who bring the track (rental) specify they don't want oil getting on the track. Which I completely understand. I just wish he's spring for a new aluminum track soon, because his current aluminum track is kinda shot.

Re: Importance of Weight

Our District just started with a District Derby this year. Too late for us, as my boys 'bridged over' last year. The boy who I helped with his car for this years' derby may or may not want to participate in the District Derby. We'll see, I suppose. I do know it gets a lot more competitive at the Dis...

Re: How to secure DFW axle?

We use a thick CA glue from Hobbytown that sets in 10 seconds. It's thicker than standard CA glue, so doesn't 'run' along the axle head once it's dropped down into our 'glue holes'. Great product for $3.99/bottle.

And no issues with fumes/condensate.

Re: Dawes Family Cars for 2016

Greg,

What are those rounded, clear covers on your entries' inner wheels? I've never seen those before. Do they obstruct the DFW's inner hub from coming into contact with the car body (or side glide)? Are these all oil lubed cars?

Thanks,

Re: Importance of Weight

Good info. Weight absolutely matters. It was the #1 variable (by a wide margin) in the Pinewood Derby Physics video that came out a year or two ago if I recall correctly. Never invested in a track, and I know we've left a lot of speed off our cars in previous builds. Only cracked 'sub-three' a few t...
