Pinewood Derby Car Weight

Hi all, I am absolutely horrible at building anything and have had two nightmare races so far with my son. Using pencil lead for lubricant

Hi, a friend of mine stated that instead of buying any graphite for lubricant, I should just use a pencil and run the lead back and forth over the nail/axle. This will make the car faster when rolling down the track.

has anyone tried this or is my leg being pulled?
