Advise me on using slots. :)

Hey folks, so I've never been a slots guy. Have been drilling our own axle holes ever since our first clueless run in Tigers. That said, a buddy I've been advising long-distance on building a car with his son. HIs rules require that he use the slots, and he doesn't want to attempt rail riding at thi...

Re: Rail riding with wafers?

I assume by wafers, you mean razor wheels? I don't have a whole lot of experience running razors. My advice would be: Run straight wheels in the rear, and use positive camber on your DFW wheel in front. I would use as little drift as possible, provided you stay on the rail. Assuming the track is smo...

Re: Rail Riding Question - indenting RR wheel

You can definitely get away with not narrowing the DFW end...especially if you put enough positive camber on the wheel (I like 7-10 degrees, personally). If you want to get super-technical, you can put a shim on the side of the raised wheel to match the amount removed on the DFW side...you'll keep t...

Re: Graphite vs. Silicone

Thanks for the responses. I emailed asking for clarification, and was told: Just silicone powder, not allowed to use liquid or spray silicone. A quick internet search didn't reveal anything that looked promising. Guess we're sticking with graphite! Maybe they meant the white powdered teflon? At any...

Re: Straightening lead rod/basic wedges

I was considering taking a thick block of wood (maybe 4x4?), drilling a 3/8' bore down the center and then cutting the block in half. Then, to straighten a section of wire, I could lay it in the half-channel in one of half of the block, place the other block on top and whack it a few times with a ru...

Re: How to keep eBay cars out of your race

If it is true a person buys a car and wins the race my heart goes out to that person. People remember the Pinewood Derby for ever and that person now has to live with it the rest of their life. That's Gotta Hurt. This is truth. The racing part of Pinewood Derby is only a fraction of the enjoyment. ...

Re: How to keep eBay cars out of your race

There's a parent/kid in my son's Pack who I am almost certain gets their cars from some for-hire builder. I don't have enough proof to nail them, though, so I haven't made a fuss. That would definitely be ugly if it came to it. I almost wonder if it would be worth having both adult and scout affirm,...

Re: Are 2009 wheel bores on an angle

Speedster and Vk, I don't know how the BSA wheels are mold injected for sure. How ever check out Max V's news letter On the making of his Max V wheels. May 5th 2017 news letter! There is some good info along with photos to check out. And it's probably close to how the BSA wheels are mold injected a...

Re: Are 2009 wheel bores on an angle

VK, I hope you're right. That's what I'm counting on. We are not allowed to run canted wheels and the wheels seem to always go to the axle head instead of the car body. That is exactly what I want to happen. The wheels will sit "Straight up and Down" per our rules. I'm assuming the 3 "dots" have so...

Re: Are 2009 wheel bores on an angle

Hodges Hobby House shows pictures of the 2009 wheel and says there is a "Bore Squish", Larger in the center and smaller on the ends. I can't tell when I polish the bores. Are the ends exactly the same size? More often then not, when setting up a car to rail ride, the rear wheels will migrate to the...

Re: Toledo Walleye Pinewood Derby

The Toledo Walleye, a professional ice Hockey team, is having a Pinewood Derby for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts on March 24, 2018. It will be held at the Huntington Center where the Walleye holds their games. They have invited many Scout Councils and The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. That has got ...

Re: Weighted Wheels

"Wheel Weights" made for Pinewood Derby don't attach to the wheels. They attach to the side of the body and take up the space in the void of the wheel, without actually touching any of the moving surfaces. Thus you get the advantageous weight location, and the aero advantage from blocking air inside...

Re: Interesting Race-Girl Scouts-Longish story. Laser Gate Issues?

Race#67 I feel that the laser gate isn't a true time due to that the first car that breaks the beam starts the time. I feel that once's the car's are release from the gate the timer is started. We use GPRM and we throw out the worst heat time. Some people like to use the laser gate and some don't. ...

Re: Interesting Race-Girl Scouts-Longish story. Laser Gate Issues?

Wow, not much time at the moment, so I can't think too hard on it, but those time variations seem WAY out of spec from what I'd expect. In pinewood derby, a few hundredths of a second is enough to put you a car length in front of somebody else. We're seeing variations of 3-tenths of a second. Someth...
