Re: Pinewood derby knowledge test.

Huhn, the axles sold "back in the day" look better than what comes in the kits now. :) I wish I had a Hobby Lobby here. Michael's is all we got locally. Speaking of Novus #2, I have heard (but not confirmed) that the Container Store sells large bottles of it for a lot cheaper than you'll find elsewh...

Where do you get the Tamiya spears? I'd like to try them.

Re: Best placement for 3/8" lead wire weights

VK, Said as seen above .. that you were allowed to move the axle holes. (and asks for suggestions on weight placement ) I asked about moving the last weight pocket hole higher up in the design.. And with what Speedster said I applaud him for talking about the 3/8 lead weight & getting more weight b...

Re: Best placement for 3/8" lead wire weights

I was wrong. I thought my friend told me the lead came from Bass Pro Shop. It is not lead. It is steel. VK, you said you filled up the holes. That should amount to about 4 ounces. How deep are those holes? They're drilled deep enough to accomodate a 1.5" length of wire. I drill down as far as I can...

Re: Bluetooth Track timers

Cables = Dependable Bluetooth = Occasional dropped communications Maybe Bluetooth is more reliable these days, but when I tested a Serial to Bluetooth device a few years back, it would occasionally drop communications. You don't want that happening in the middle of running a heat. Maybe if the time...

Re: Best placement for 3/8" lead wire weights

VK, The very last drilled weight pocket in the end of the car.. could you change up your COG even more by drilling it a little bit higher up from the bottom of the car body? I have seen some larger car designs where the last weight pocket in the end of the car is drilled a little higher up from the...

Re: First real derby race... wheel advice

Also we drilled weight holes like the ones in the PDF.... I bought a mixed set of tungsten weights.... should I be using tungsten rods instead or does that make any difference? For drilled holes, tungsten rods will fit most easily. Depending on the shape of your weights, you may need to cut differe...

Re: First real derby race... wheel advice

How much difference does extended wheelbase make over the standard axle slots? Not a huge difference. IMO, an extended wheelbase makes the car more stable and easier to tune. Also, moving the rear wheels back gives you better weight distribution and energy transfer. That said, it's a minor consider...

Re: First real derby race... wheel advice

Good to know! I was prepared to try to take weight off of the wedge by drilling some holes in it or figured out a way to hollow out the center. I found this website and was intrigued. http://boysdad.com/archives/3306#_Toc301429867 Routing is hard (IMO). I have never been up to doing that. If I want...

Re: First real derby race... wheel advice

Hah, looks like a rather serious typo in the rules here: https://i.imgur.com/ZizZ7f3.png May want to point that out to the race organizers. Anyhow, I think you'd be in your rights to purchase a set of wheels that had only been trued on the outer tread, e.g.: http://derbyevolution.com/Precision-Turne...

Ugh. Personally I would do all I could to keep the Derby from being a time where kids were on phones. Just personal bias. :)

Re: Aerodynamics ?

:agree: Same here. one of the last things I do. It can be tricky making sure you don't temporarily warp the car in drill setup and then it will look like you can't drill straight when you check the drill job. i think this is going off topic, but being that the intent of the thread was mislead by th...

Is there any guides for how to make a race schedule in a spreedsheet program so I can import it as a csv file?

Do you mean creating a roster in a spreadsheet and then importing it into GPRM?

Re: Best Design Voting

I don't know that I'd trust Scouts to only choose three to vote on if it was by push-button.

If the beads are a uniform weight, couldn't you tally by weight?
