Review of our race day

Hello all- I just wanted to thank everyone for all their advice on running our race, and give a report on how it went, in case anyone was interested in the lessons learned. We had 7 tigers, 10 wolves, 10 bears, and 6 webelos I. Inspections opened at 8:30 and ran until 9:15, which worked great. At 9:...

Re: Big tie-breaking in GPRM

Ah, I understand. That makes sense. Thanks- I feel better understanding the logic.

The elapsed time tiebreaker rule will still apply for a 3 way tie though, right?

Re: Big tie-breaking in GPRM

I took a careful look at the race results, specifically at 2nd place. Fox beat Gaige head-to-head, and Fox also beat Bryce head-to-head, getting first place in both of those heats. He took 2nd place in his third heat, against two other racers. Shouldn't the tie-breaker rules have given Fox 2nd place...

Re: Big tie-breaking in GPRM

I just thought it was weird to have a 6 way unbroken tie. Does the test data feature establish elapsed times for the races when using points mode? I just didn't expect to have all of the tiebreak rules come up even, and was worried about a misconfiguration.

Big tie-breaking in GPRM

Hello all- I just ran a simulated race, using the GPRM test data feature. After running the den races, I created a new Grand Finals round. I had it grab the top 4 from each den, which is 16 kids total. To save time, I did a 1-round 3-lane PPN. Unfortunately, as I've been warned, there are a whole bu...

Accuracy of PPN in finalist selection

Hello all- Following some feedback from my committee, I've determined that using a 2-round points-based system for my pack level race is going to be necessary, but time is limited. If I have ~16 cars and run a PPN schedule, 3 lanes, only 1 round, scored by points, followed by a 7-car 2-round CPN fin...

Re: How to make it "more like racing"

Thanks for the discussion, Randy. I appreciate it. I do agree that adding the bracket at the end might come at a cost. If we did it, and the results didn't match the top elapsed times, I'd be concerned. Passing all scouts on to the pack race is a big no no. I got very significant pushback from some ...

Re: How to make it "more like racing"

My "King of the Hill" race has some separate time allotted, not included in that 2 hours, which is good. The problem I have with the 2-round system is that it's going to weird to explain why, for the first den (let's say it has 6) we did something different than for the next den, which mig...

Re: How to make it "more like racing"

I'm racing 4 dens, each of which will have ~8-10 kids. I figured I could do all four dens of den level racing in 2 hours, using the twice around 3 lane PPN elapsed time racing. I wouldn't want to go that much more than that. I could draw for random lanes for the "final four", or allow the ...

Re: How to make it "more like racing"

Thanks all. I'm talking about a den of maybe 8 or 9, and I'm time limited, so while I'd love to do a full 2-run 3-lane PPN, followed by a 7-car PN, that'd be a little silly, since maybe only one guy wouldn't make the 2nd round. The desire to have elimination racing does have a historical component t...

How to make it "more like racing"

I've presented my pinewood derby plan to my committee, and one piece of negative feedback I'm trying to address is that elimination racing "feels like racing." It's exciting, and it's head to head. My PPN schedule using elapsed times is unsatisfying on that regard. I'm using elapsed time b...

Re: Advancing EVERYONE to pack finals

I got some feedback from some of my other leaders that this is a bad idea. They see advancing to the pack "finals" as a privilege, and liken opening the pack race to everyone to giving everyone a trophy. That was something I hadn't thought of, and their objection is firm enough that we won...

Thanks for all the advice and help! I'm going to say we'll go with my wife's plan. It's pretty clever.
