Re: Canopy Weights from a Spoon
Speedster....when we get things put together, wheels on etc, I'll get a pic up. The COM is without the fenders though. I actually forgot to check what it was with the fenders on so I simply laid the fenders over top of the dome and it was still about the same. The fenders are a tad heavier in the fr...

Re: Canopy Weights from a Spoon
Hi there Speedster! Normally we'd put a lot more time into designing and building something the looked pretty unique. This year both boys wanted something fast. We haven't tested these yet but plan to this week before our race on Friday. The purple on is my dad entry. Tho other two are our son's. Th...

Re: Canopy Weights from a Spoon
Thanks for the complement....I just hope they stay on. If anything, they do make it look cool. I updated the Pinterest link with a couple other ones we created. If you have the time, you can get a little creative with the spoon. On one we used the normal shape of the spoon and drooped it to a point ...

Canopy Weights from a Spoon
This year we've come up with something different (but similar) to the tungsten canopy weights. We've taken a smaller soup spoon, cut the handle off and ground it down to make a "half-shell" that sat nice and flat on the car body. We then melted lead into it, right up to the edge. After the...

Re: Weighted Wheels
Yeah, I'm sure he learned something but really, though they are fast cars, in my book, the learning should come from the tools introduced to the scout each year, not just repetitive "same car as last year". They "skin" the cars with candy bar wrappers is all - no painting. I thin...

Re: Wheel Rub - Wider Stance
Hi Speedster...I'll get a pic of the car up soon. Thanks for the info on cant. The fingernail polish trick will help. We removed the glued-on wooded spacers from the car, bringing it back to standard wheel base so it shouldn't wonder around on the track as much as it did.

Re: Wheel Rub - Wider Stance
Spacers between the wheels and the body made the car waver too much going down the track. Though the car was fast, it lost potential energy.

Re: Weighted Wheels
Nope...weighted wheels seem to be a bad idea. The track test was worth trying but I couldn't dial it in enough to make a significant increase in speed.

Re: Weighted Wheels
Speedster....you bet, we like to try new things while still following the rules. We've had a fellow scout leader in the past put and hour into "his" car right before the race and take first place several years in a row. It's nothing but a flat racer. I'm not sure how much the scout is gett...

Wheel Rub - Wider Stance
Currently near the end of our build and we are wondering about car "stance". Last year we built a car with sides that curved inwards near the wheels to reduce friction. This years build didn't allow for that. The sides are flat and that got us thinking. What if we were to extend the width ...

Re: Weighted Wheels
Makes sense...I'm a cyclist so I thought more about it from that point of view. For speed you do want light wheels. It would probably take more energy from the start to get them rolling. With a short track, it might not result in an advantage. It is one theory I might want to test a little bit more....

Weighted Wheels
Recently wondering about the physics of weighted wheels. I found these online and was thinking of using them for a slender/think PWD build. My original idea was to superglue these in the rear wheels. They fit exactly within the wheels and it seems to me that they are both great for using that space ...
