Re: Tungsten for $3 an ounce
My Hobby Lobby has the 3/8" rounds as well as the tungsten plates. They have 3oz and 2oz pkgs. The 3oz are about $15 and the 2oz are about $10. Coupons are available pretty much every other week.

Re: Metalcraft Ideas
Thanks for the resources! I plan to wait for warmer weather to use electricity. I will have the boys build their own rocket launcher. As a Pack we enjoy launching rockets at camp.

Metalcraft Ideas
Each year I try to do something different with the boys. They are Webelo 1s now which puts them in 4th grade. In years past we have made projects with wood, paper, cardboard, leather, and plastic. This year I was hoping to come up a neat project the boys could make with metal. I would like to use nu...

Re: Proposal for New Awards - Due in 1 Month!
Last year we tried adding design awards. 1st 2nd and 3rd per den. We let the boys vote for there favorites. This went over very well and allowed a lot of boys that wouldn't have otherwise won an award win. All the boys in the pack voted for their favorites in each den so that way a few boys couldn't...

Re: Optimal COG distance below axle plane?
The higher the COM or lower, usually limited by the track itself, can create leverage. As suggested when you hit a bump/rail etc with a high or low COM your car can become unstable. I know it is possible to raise the COM up as much as an inch or more which creates a lever arm with the COM. At that p...

Re: Help making Indy or Formula one type car
My son wanted a similar car 2 years ago. I found that basswood although not quite as light as balsa is much easier to work with and doesn't ding as easily. We used 1/64 birch plywood for the spoiler. You might be able to bend it to create the holes with the airflow while minimizing the drag. My son'...

Re: New BSA Wheel and Axle??
We have already purchased our kits. I plan on checking through them to make sure they don't have the new wheels. From what I have seen so far I think we are safe.

Re: New BSA Wheel and Axle??
I opened the new wheels in front of my scout shop manager, who said they are the same wheels we always had, to show her the difference. She didn't seem at all concerned. Parts is Parts. I went on to try to explain how many boys have the hearts in pinewood derby and that even a thousandth of a second...

Re: A promise to keep
I understand you made a promise but I think you missed the point. Its not all about winning. While winning usually is the result of hard work and a lot of patience it's not always the case. There are things beyond your control that can undo the best laid plans. As you found out last year. I think yo...

Re: New BSA Wheel and Axle??
I am in Charlotte NC. The national distribution center is here in Charlotte. Last week I stopped by the scout shop outside of the distribution center on Westinghouse Blvd they did not have them. Our council shop on 7th Street did have them today though.

Re: New BSA Wheel and Axle??
Just stopped by my local scout shop. The new wheels were in. :D  :scratching:  :? :idk: It will be a few days before I can take the time to fully examine them. Now the question is do the kits have the new wheels? I know the leftovers from last year won't. Lots of questions now on how ...

Re: New BSA Wheel and Axle??
This sounds like my worst fear. I don't expect that the new wheels will be readily available by the time of our derby. However for a price they will be available from vendors or ebay. It could come down to or be perceived as he who spends the most wins.

Re: Wheel Mod Experiment
In my opinion I would only go with option 1. I work with BSA wheels and can cut a razor wheel relatively easily with patience. V an H cuts seem rather difficult, in softer plastic especially, unless you have special tools for it. I use an exacto saw to cut the bulk of the wheel away, next use a chis...
