Re: How to bore the wheels
So, anything you do to the bore must be done with high precision in size, location, and direction! Ok, I know my Sears $99 drill press must not qualify as precision equipment but I am up to the challenge of making the best wheels possible including the bores. Would you lathe (or XT shave) the tread...

Re: New To This
I remember our first time building a car, it was fun and very frustrating. If we could do it all over again, for the first time, I would: 1) Look at a wedge design. It cuts way down on the amount of time you will spend cutting and especially sanding. 2) Go to maximum-velocity and purchase their down...

Re: Single Lane Timer
If you are considering The Judge and want to save a few bucks try contacting him. I know he has some orphan parts sometimes and might be able build you one. I recall it being $20-30 less than a new one?

Re: District Race - Improving Attendance
It seems that if there is to be a council race, you need to get the PWD chairmen from each district to get together and hammer out a common set of rules. Otherwise, there will be lots of compaints from parents and a council race may die pretty quickly. Thank you, Randy. I agree and hope the rules c...

Re: District Race - Improving Attendance
Randy, Our District race is open to all, and we're going every year. We also have a Council Race, and only the top 3 Cubs (including Weblos) and top 3 Tigers qualify to go to Council. Actually, 12 in total qualify: 3 Cubs (speed), 3 Cubs (show), 3 Tigers (speed) and 3 Tigers (show). In fact, it too...

Re: Sharp Tip of Axle and Alignment
That sounds interesting. Have others tried this successfully? How much axle needs to go into the block for retaining good alignment and supporting the body?pwdarchitect wrote:2k10,
If your rules allow, Why not also do that to the rear axles so that you can get the weight back farther in between the axles?

Re: What do you plan to do different this year?
Good question. Actually we did many different things with wheels, axles, body and weight placement. Regardless, the many runs were so smooth and consistent I am convinced it was a major factor.

Re: What do you plan to do different this year?
Thanks Mike for starting this thread. I was wondering when Derby Talk would start to get going before the next season. (Unless you race WIRL, then the season never ends) PW Grasshopper you are right on! I will start early with my son and spend 10 or 15 minutes a day polishing axles and working on a...

Re: What do you plan to do different this year?
1) Start earlier and have shorter, more frequent building sessions. 2) More time on polishing axles and alignment. They were good but we can do better. 3) Consider designs that will provide more structural integrity. Our rail did not like the ballistic stoppers at districts. If we do well enough to ...

Re: Wing or wedge?
Thanks Mike, I was wondering whether to change the basic design to Stan's rail, then glue a thin strip of Basswood over the openings to streamline it. Fat Elvis We built one last season. It was fast but did not like the ballistic stop section at districts. If we could have done it over again the ra...

Metal working site
I admit to not knowing a heck of a lot about power tools and nothing about lathes or mills. Before taking the plunge and buying a lathe I wanted to learn a little bit about them. While surfing I came across this: http://metalworking.com Barely scratching the surface of the site I found this tutorial...

Used power tools on ebay
Ebay usually has basic model Taig lathes and Sherline mills up for bid. I don't have a clue what to look in the pictures or questions to ask sellers. I would hate to get a "bargain" price and then have to sink a bunch of money into it for new parts. Could some folks with machining experien...

Re: Hobby Miter Box wide enough for pwd
For some reason I thought some of these were 1 3/4 inch wide and others were 2 inch.
I will check the one I have tonight. Perhaps you have one that is 1 3/4?
