Re: Success!

Nope- It's a 7 year old timer with the red LED displays, and those are fine. Seven years old? :scratching: The company that makes those timers hasn't been in business anywhere near that long. Dunno- the pack had it at least one year before we showed up, I thought 2- my elder son joined them as a Ti...

Re: Success!

The mini maglite was used to "back light" the display? Nope- It's a 7 year old timer with the red LED displays, and those are fine. The burned out LED was the infra-red that is used to make the beam for the lane 1 detector at the finish line. So when the timer was set up, lane 1 showed a "c" indica...

Success!

Many thanks, all- the adapter fit and the race went off mostly without a hitch! :)

We found one of the LEDs burned out, but we've seen that problem before-- jury rigged it with a mini maglite and all is well.

Score one for DerbyTalk!

Re: OH NO! WHERE's my Power cord! Race tomorrow!

If you think 12V is it, I may be in luck-- I have a 12V DC/500mA with the right style of plug in my collection! The SmartLine timer that I have uses a 12VDC 500mA power supply, so that will fit the bill perfectly. That does seem a bit strange, since other serial timers use 9V or less to power their...

Re: OH NO! WHERE's my Power cord! Race tomorrow!

FWIW, the Fast Track timer (three large LED numerals and a bunch of other bits and pieces inside) uses a 9VDC 600mA wall wart and the shell is, indeed negative. OK. I've got a collection of 9V adapters 500mA and greater with both polarities. Hopefully one of them is the right size as well- I won't ...

I did indeed. Also, I tried a 5V that was with all of my pinewood gear, but no dice. (I'm fairly certain it belongs to my scale)

I didn't want to go above 5V without some more data...

Re: OH NO! WHERE's my Power cord! Race tomorrow!

You guys are awesome! I tried the website, but didn't have much luck finding any specs in the docs. They do have the phone number, though. If you think 12V is it, I may be in luck-- I have a 12V DC/500mA with the right style of plug in my collection! I'll try to call them and confirm in the morning....

OH NO! WHERE's my Power cord! Race tomorrow!

Hey, all, I've got a real problem-- we have a Smartline timer, and the power cord was nowhere to be found during setup tonight. The race is in the morning-- do any of you know the voltage/polarity/etc on the power adapter so I can grab one at Radio Shack? This timer has served us well for many years...

Allignment- what's the tissue method?

I've read up on several alignment methods, but haven't found a how-to on the tissue method. Can someone give me a run-down on how that's done?

Re: Points vs. Times Scoring

At what point do we teach children to lose graciously and to have fun participating in the competition. What value is given to those that truly excel in the event when their achievement is leveled-off and minimised in order to protect the feelings of others? True. You can't teach one to lose gracio...

Where to get lane-by-lane tray?

We need an additional tray for carrying cars from the impound to the track.

Is there a kit or a tray at one of the derby stores? (Kit would be coolest because building such a thing meets a Wolf requirement..)

Re: New Pack Race Coordinator Proposes New Format, Seeks Adv

Wise comment about not introducing too much change at once. Indeed! I'm actually concerned about that and I'm trying to limit myself. (-: My 2nd son will be a Tiger next year, so I'm looking at a 5 year plan to morph the derby into something spectacular by adding a little change each year based on ...

Re: Graphite Pads - Pass it or Reject it?

Reject. According to http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/washer it is unquestionably a washer ("a flat thin ring"). Agree, it's a washer. If I have a "no washers" rule, it's out. It's also a functional non-kit part, so if I have an "add no parts from outside the kit except dead weight and non-functional ...

Re: Tips sheet handout?

Excerpts from ours: To the Scouts: Welcome to Pinewood Derby Season! You have been given a Pinewood Derby Kit, this rule packet, and perhaps a foam practice block. You and Akela will use these materials to build your very own Pinewood Derby RACECAR that you will bring to the pack race. You and your ...
