Re: 2012 Revised Rules

Been away awhile and as the Northern Star Council race chair I should probably answer ... how about the most recent... The 5 minutes was historical from the council's rules and the next race limit was added. The 'next race' that the car is scheduled to race in can be delayed until the car is repaire...

Re: Digital scale?

I use a 1" x 3" piece of foam wrapped with some duct tape to hold the cars.

Re: "Bounce" on Spring OPen Gate

I went the other way.... strong springs and 5/8" dense foam from a door insulation kit. The start drops and stops on the foam.

CBD GO! One takes a Flying leap!

CBD GO! One takes a flying leap after passing the Max-V Turbo Fan car at about 120 feet. (Turbo Fan did finish in about 30 seconds.) AWESOME! http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii222/PwdRacing/BSA/StarCamp2010/th_100_8353.jpg There are some other car/track/people photos from the NorthernStar Council...

Re: Allow Lightened wheels?

Until your favorite tool vendor comes out with a $12.95(affordable by most) tool that allows 95% of kids(almost every YOUTH) to perform the task, don't allow it. As I once heard, "Using lightened wheels is an attempt to buy your way to the trophies." and that is not in any of the purposes ...

Re: What's the plan for timer failure?

I have the spare timer(s).... just in case. Never needed to use it in 16 years of racing, but I have it just in case.... the motto of a good scout. ;) I actually go over board and bring an entire electronics system with me: pc, wires, and timer. I have had issues when running with other timers and h...

Yep. The helpers at my workshop made one from NorthernStar Council. I'll see if I can get a photo of it.

Re: Just need to vent...

Bouncing floor by the finish line can make it sway/vibrate enough to cause the early finish too. We have one site with a floor that bounces lots and we have to remind the boys not to jump up and down by the finish line. We have them move towards the start gate if they want to jump up and down. :D

Re: Not stopping!

The accumulation of graphite will cause the stopping material to fail. . . also it seems to basically dry out or develop a slippery surface. I have used some 220 grit sandpaper and a tack cloth and to "refinish" the surface. It probably needs to be either cleaned or replaced. BestTrack doe...

Re: Best Track question . . .

Thank you. I did remember to get the tape measure out while the track was up. The curve is about 41" long o the racing surface. The length from the start to the bottom of the curve section was about 114" on the floor. I need to bring a plumb bob next time to get a better measurement! :scra...

Re: Best Track question . . .

The bottom picture of the "Council Track" is one of my tracks at the Mall of America last spring. The sections are made by BestTrack but has had several modifications to the assembly, support, and stop areas. The elevation/supports are braced and equidistant(42" between) the...

Re: Best Track question . . .

The 35' length INCLUDES the stop section. The curve PLUS the stop section add up to 7 feet. 7 foot slope, ~4ft curve, 3x7' sections, ~3ft stop section = 35' add another 7' section for the 42' length. If I remember, I'll get a tape out tomorrow at one of the races to measure the actual length. :think...

Re: Old Timer Questions

just a wild guess.... 960 samples = 9600 baud (10 bits x 960) seems like it could be a simple character stream reporting device status . . . time for each character is constant - no need to worry about "timing" with windows. . . just read the characters... each character is 1/960 second (~...

Sure can help out! :D I have some that you could even borrow. I'm in Apple Valley.

I'll have a big track and a small test track at the upcoming StarCamp in May at Stearns Camp if you want to stop by and check them out.
