I (we) get a lot of ideas from cars seen here, ebay and some of the other Derby websites.
We will look through photos and my son will say "Dad, can I make one like that?"
Some designs are easier to cut out than others.

I have copies of David's book as well as Randy's and they are both excellent.

Re: How's this for a Council race...
I am glad we don't run our District races on a piece of junk track like that.
That is just crazy that anyone would use something like that.

Re: District Races and Some Venting
We had a situation in which 2 very identical cars were known fast the night before our Pack Derby... for the daddy race, but they weren't my son's cars... his car was slower, he wanted to build a copy of my cars the morning of the race (possible because they are so simple)... and he did... got 2nd ...

Congrats!
We have never down AWANA races at our church.
We have a lot of under priveleged kids that do not have any help at home.
Again congrats and keep training them to serve Him.

Re: Return of the New Guy - Rules Nightmare
At some point, we're going to have to start building these cars only in workshops, with no cars brought home so that dad can take over. I think that would capture the true intent of the activity. Much to the contrary. The true intent; it is a parent/child activity designed to teach as well as foste...

We use Super Glue on ours if they need it at all which they rarely do.

Re: GrandPrix Race Manager V7.0 - Just Released
Randy,
This is exciting news and I will be getting the updated version soon.
I hope to be able to figure out how to operate it this year.
I am not going to wait to late this year and I am confident that I can do it.

I would have flagged it also although I personally don't think it would be an advantage.

Re: New Pack, new format of Derby
I'd pass this one by ... too many problems. Instead of making a "PWD Workshop Session" into a help, you would be making it into a hindrance! Here are some issues: 1. Schedule compatibility: The plan "force fits" every parent's schedule into a limited timeframe. A parent with a c...

Re: BSA pinewood rules
As the Co-Director of our District PWD, I have found that distributing the District rules to all the packs well ahead of the season made for a very simple check-in at our District event. Only one wheel issue out of over 150 cars. Clearly stated rules, with diagrams as needed, made this possible. Ou...

My son's Wolf car (4 wheeler) was considerably faster than his Tiger car (3 wheeler) with pretty much the same work involved. Well the same type of building, painting, weighting, axle prep etc. :) The goal for him is to have each car better than the last and that both of us have a great time doing i...

Bubba,
With a 'slow' opening gate such as the one pictured in your link I believe the quick start bar would have an advantage.
The amount of advantage would be variable as in how fast or slow the gate dropped.
