Here is an experiment that showed a very small improvement from graphite on the tread surface:

Re: Rail Riding - First Attempt (failure, sort of)

A couple of thoughts: 1. Rail Rider - To minimize the rebound when striking the tool, put the Pro-Axle Press on a piece of wood (2x4) on he concrete. The wood will absorb some of the impact and minimize the rebound. Also, the Rail-Rider is sensitive to the diameter of the axle. So if you use BSA Nai...

Re: Rail Riding - relationship between COM and drift

As you make the COG more aggressive, you need to increase the drift so that there is more pressure on the guide rail to help keep the car going straight. (since there is less pressure on the track itself)

Re: Weighted Wheels

Below is a link to a test I did on wheel weighting - the bottom line is you want light wheels (as was said above). Vitamin K is correct that pinewood derby "wheel weights" do not touch the wheels.

Re: infra red timers - why is the receiver on the bottom?

The Judge timer from newdirections does have the light source in the track and the sensors on the bridge. In my experience it has the least issue with light reflectivity. Maybe better than flat black paint is to reduce the size of the aperture in the track. An 1/8 inch hole is big enough so sense th...

I use a starter from newdirections.ws (the Judge, John Shreffler). He has versions for most tracks, and they are well under $200.

Re: MaxV wheels and oil

You can use either Krytox 100 or NyOil with the MV Wheels/axles, but it is really easy to overdo it with NyOil. But in any case, make sure that oil is not running down the side of the wheels, or you will really foul up the track. Just one drop is all that is needed.

Re: Lasers as better finish-line emitters?

There are emitters and collectors that are tuned, so that ambient light has little to no effect. John Shreffler at http://www.newdirections.ws/judge.html uses these in his Judge timer. He also has a version that can be used in direct sunlight. Maybe John can chime in with some additional information.

Re: How to build a car to epically fail?

I built a car once for our leader. I took a large washer that just fit inside the rear wheels. I cut the washer in half with a hacksaw, then glued a half washer into each of the rear wheels. Other than that the car was normal. When it went down the track, it would go "Whoop, whoop, whoop ..." as the...

Micro Tungsten Cylinders from Maximum Velocity

We made a special purchase of Micro Tungsten Cylinders, and we are offering them at a very low price. At $2.95 per ounces, it is the least expensive tungsten on the market today. http://www.maximum-velocity.com/pics/15046.jpg You can find them here: http://www.maximum-velocity.com/pinewood_derby_wei...
