Re: Friday night test and tune...

One additional advantage of the separate check in that we have seen is the pack has all the cars to pre-judge for special awards and print up certificates. We run a race for one pack that gives out a special award for every car like "best use of the color blue", "most unique shape" etc. In other wor...

Re: Computer Backup during the Race?

Good idea. We hadn't thought about a mid-race failure.

Re: Tiebreaker Scenario

Wow! are ties really a big issue out there? I can't think of a time where we ever had a tie using a timer accurate to .0001. For other judging methods, I can understand it.

Re: tips of running and setting up a PWD race

Since our group runs 20-25 derbies a year, the desire to eliminate problems and make setup and tear down easy has forced us to organize. We have the luxury of a dedicated trailer with all of our equipment on wheels (including the crates for the track & other equipment). Here are a couple of things w...

Re: Pinewood Derby Drivers License

We use Printmaster to create our driver licenses. It is very reasonably priced. We use the same spreadsheet data that we import into GrandPrix to import into the template for Printmaster. That populates all of the data fields and produces our licenses on business card stock. You can check out Printm...

Re: District event who do you invite?

For the last several years, our group has run 2 district derbies in the Minneapolis area. In both cases, packs are allowed to send the top two racers from each rank to the race. We use our 4-Lane track, use GrandPrix and a Judge, use times (eliminating worst time) for scoring, and advance the top tw...

Re: Involving The Boys

Great ideas so far. Any other input from folks as to how they involve the boys at their race? Darin's post reminded me that we used to interview the top two place finishers from each division after the race, but somehow quit doing that a couple of years back. On a side note, I have tried a "Fan In T...

Re: Involving The Boys

The track is a milled solid aluminum, anodized with a teflon coating. It is modular in length. It can be run as 36', 48', or 60'. To my knowledge we have never run 60' and have only run 36' once when we were pinched for space. Our usual 48' configuration measures 45' 10" from starting line to finish...

We elevate the track on sawhorses to improve viewing. We have pictures on our website if you want to see what I mean.

Involving The Boys

Our group runs 20-25 derbies a year for packs in our area. We use an elevated track which requires scaffolding for the car loader. We want to involve the boys more but are struggling as to how to do it. Our discussions as a group include the following ideas: - We have learned that we really lose the...

Re: What music have you used before the race?

After running nearly 100 races, we have come to the conclusion that the music pre-show has to appeal to all generations from grandparents to the boys. Because of that we use a wide mix of music from polkas to rock and roll. I appreciate the contributions here since I picked up a couple new ideas. I ...

Re: What music have you used before the race?

We do a mock radio show 1/2 hour before the race (Radio RACE). If you want to listen to a sample of what we do, Right-Click on the Radio RACE microphone on the bottom left corner of our home page for a sample. In coming weeks I will make a link to additional recordings. We use a playlist of several ...
