BSA wheel diameter go/no go limits?
Just curious, for those BSAers that use a Go / No Go gauge for checking wheel diameter, what dimension do you use for your gauge? 1.180 inches? 1.170 inches? Looking at 1.180 as our rules are pretty restrictive (light sanding only), but getting some pushback from folks who think you can't true a new...

Re: Should Councils ban the use of lead (Pb) in PWD cars?
I certainly wouldn't be opposed to some formal BSA unified guidelines and standardized warnings. I wouldn't even mind signing a waiver that describes responsible handling and disposal. Beyond that things get a little testy for me. I still can't get over not being able to use my liquid fuel stove an...

Re: How to you run Check-in?
...we do staggered times, but we start the race for each Den at the end of their registration period and immediately start the registration for the next Den while the previous one is racing. Smartest way to go IMO. We do this at our Pack, and we have a Council event with approx. 1300 cars run on 10...

Re: Should Councils ban the use of lead (Pb) in PWD cars?
No. We do provide Safety precautions to our Adults and Scouts as part of conducting workshops and discussing the event at our Pack meeting, but I really don't think we need to get into the restriction business for materials that can be used with relatively low risk. I would rather talk to the boys a...

Re: tips needed on how to paint raised white letters on wheels
MaxV's latest newsletter has some good info on this. http://www.maximum-velocity.com/pinewood-derby-blog/2018/06/pinewood-derby-times-v9i9/ One of the best articles I've seen on start-to-finish building, including the white letters on the wheels. Bubba p.s. I think MaxV's OK with linking this...

Re: New BSA Wheel and Axle??
As an aside, I wonder if National is ever going to change the picture of the car on the box to reflect updated wheels. :scratching: Even the "2010" car on the new boxes is sporting pre-1999 wheels... Just wondering... :? Bubba ...but I guess at least they're not PineCar or Awana whee...

Re: Wheel replacement guide questions
You do want to keep it streamlined and sturdy. Don't underestimate the value of the "safety net" function. I notice that these examples are fastened with two screws. Does it need to be that sturdy? Does it need to be removable ? Oops... forgot to mention. :( Most of our experience with th...

Re: Wheel replacement guide questions
Don't underestimate the value of the "safety net" function. At the "beginner" level events, you often run into tracks that are either poorly maintained (and in poor condition), poorly setup (esp. not level side to side), or both. It is quite possible that you will experience some...

2) Leveling the playing field - frankly I don't think the rules should be tweaked to this end. ... the new wheels would seem to hold a distinct advantage over the old due to their "out of the box" advantages (ex. coned hubs). But I don't think it is necessary to tweak the rules to begin t...

Re: New BSA Wheel and Axle??
The more I think about the 'wheel deal', the more I think that most Packs are going to end up having to allow the new wheels as well as older mold wheels... While I suppose it is possible at the Pack level to prohibit the new wheels (assuming you have enough on hand to cover everyone, and especiall...

Cool. Didn't know they were gonna put that kit out.Mr. Slick wrote:FYI, I just got the 100th Anniversary Edition of the Big Rig kit. All of the wheels are the NEW style! I'm going to guess that since this is a new product this year all of the kits will have the new wheels.

Re: New BSA Wheel and Axle??
Maybe there are not always new axles with the new wheels ? I think that is a correct statement, from other feedback that I have heard. It seems that are using a "Cracker Jack" distribution strategy i.e. "A surprise in every box". Just thought I'd throw that out there for us old ...
