Re: Weight Placement
OK Well at least I have a good idea of why not to try this. I knew I was not the only one who ever thought of this, but had not seen an explanation before. Thanks for the quick reply!

Weight Placement
OK... I have learned a lot here, but I keep hearing to keep the weight low. My question is why low? If it is on an incline and the weight was extended above the car (assuming there is clearance for the timer at the end of the track); wouldn't this be like holding a 5# weight at arms length (instead ...

Re: Which axle location to use for front and back wheels?
OK I am trying to figure this out too. I was thinking that if I put the long overhang in the rear I could have more weight on the rear axle, and move the center of gravity to the rear. Right? Where is my logic breaking down?
I get the 1oz front, 4oz rear ratio, but how does the overhang affect that?

Avoiding Damage
We are trying to build a rail car this year(at least that is what I think it is called ... We split the block in 3 flat pieces and cut out the center). We then used the 2 other pieces to cut out "fenders" to be nailed/glued on. The side "rails" of the car are about .5" thick...

Re: Wet Sanding
Glad I asked, I was about to wet down regular sandpaper and try that! I found a variety pack at the local auto parts store with 220, 400, 800, & 1000 grit sheets. Too bad I bought it before I looked here ... oh well I am sure we will do OK with it for now.

Wet Sanding
OK I see a lot of advice that says sand and prime, then wet sand, prime, wet sand, paint .... I am still learning about the whole painting process. I understand that priming and sanding is important, but what is wet sanding. Just wet sandpaper? If stupid hurt, I would be in the emergency room!

Re: Trohpies
THANKS! I missed the trohpy shop today, but I might get them on Monday. I also work for a delivery company and one of our customers is a distributor of trophy parts, maybe we could get parts and build them?

New To This
I am new to this derby stuff and would like to help my son build a nice looking and fast car this year. The problem is ME. I am not terribly handy with woodworking or painting. Any good advice on how to spruce up this years car for someone with a ssubstandard skillset?

Trohpies
I am setting up my first pinewood derby; what is the best bet, local trophy shops or online dealers? Are there any specifically good or bad online dealers? Is there anything I need to know about buying trophies? Any advice would be great!
