I put the tape on a scrap piece of soft wood and cut mine out with an x-acto blade, they can be quite cheap (even for a full set) at hobby stores.

I think the fenders look fine. You should have put a bottle of nitrous under the hood. ;)

Re: Derby Evolution Sale and Clearance Items

How much is shipping on the tungsten?

I tend to get my tungsten using a 40% off coupon for {insert local hobby store here} because I don't have to pay for shipping.

Re: Air brush like techniques?

What I found with the airbrush is the spray area is much smaller and easier to control. You can do flames with varigated colors with a spray paint can but the spray area is so wide it's easy to overspray and cover stuff you don't want to if your not careful. Practice on some scraps of wood first to ...

Re: Adding a Friction Brake to an Old Track

I put our track together on Sunday and tested it, and every car configuration I tested stopped at least a foot before the end of the stop tape. I am quite pleased, and confident that it will work for us at our district race. Total parts were probably about $40, but could be less if you didn't get a ...

Re: Checking run out on the wheels.

There is a fun quote in the book that describes the Corvette C5 (fifth generation model) and how it almost didn't make it to production. The story goes that in previous models of the car the first 300 off the assembly line were always white. This was done to celebrate the fact that in the very first...

Re: Rules say all 4 wheels must touch

...it is very hard to get a rigid car to have all 4 wheels evenly on the ground without at least a drill press which would leave 95 percent of our pack unable to do that. My first year as a cub parent I did it; it wasn't hard. We used the slots. I put all four wheels in with the nails slanted very ...

Re: Want to build my self a PWD car

You might want to ask on a league board, as they're the ones that really push the envelope for modifications. Many scout derbies don't allow the type of mods you're talking about.

Do you generally mount the battery permanently? meaning it's not a "user replaceable" component? :) Or could you swap out the battery later on if you wanted.

You might wait a few days... it's possible that some folks only come to the board occasionally rather than every day. Or every hour. ;)

Re: This year's derby car

Despite having much more body to push through the wind, it was easily beating the fastest cars there, and if all goes well, we should do well today. How did the race go? I noticed you used a 9 volt battery. I've been keeping light "kit" materials from "happy meal" toys, and they often use the small...
