Re: Speed workshop...format suggestions?

Tagged for good info, as I plan on holding a workshop in a couple of months (since there is no one else in our pack that has shown any interest in doing so, and we have multiple boys with no male influence at home/tools/guidance/any idea what to do at all). Read this post about possible liability, ...

Re: Speed workshop...format suggestions?

A word of caution. This comes from my working History. Whenever you do ANYTHING with the scouts, be certain you have the Boy Scouts of America protecting you legally. Don't ever put yourself in a situation where you are the one that is solely liable. Best of Luck in your workshops. What do you sugg...

Re: Inflatable Raingutter Regatta Raceway Review

If these are the ones they sell at the Scout Shop, we bought one and used it as a practice gutter for our twins for a couple of years. They are great devices for practicing for sure. We do have one small quibble about them. Our boys' method of blowing into the boats' sails is to almost put their ear...

Re: Final Build for Team Birddog

Those are very cool cars Birddog! If the number 72 the Pack number? If not, what's the significance? Question about your Pledge statement: Do you typically use Pledge like folks use Brasso on their axles? Or do you do it in addition to Brasso? Good Luck to your son at his final Pinewood Derby! Scrol...

Outstanding Team Noskills! Take a bow!    I love the different trophy styles, and especially like the steering wheel Pack Winner Trophy. Those times are nuts. Even with oil. Well done!!! 8) Let me know what you plan to do with regard to building a case for the cars...

Re: Helped my neighbor's son build a faster car

Very nice. 23 cubes with full weight wheels...thats one thin spoon. Best of luck. Noskills Our trick in making a thin spoon is to rout out the underside of the car body (versus long, drawn out sanding of the top to bring the top down). This gets the car thin fast, and is much easier than sanding th...

Re: Opinions Wanted: Critique my Rail-riding explanation

VK, I think that's an outstanding write-up. I don't think it's too wordy, but then again, I like a lot of detail. Considering that your target audience is folks who have no idea what rail riding is, or any of the 'steering' principles required to set up a rail rider, I think the amount of detail is ...

Re: New Logo - Need Feedback

I like #46. Some suggestions for further evolving the logo would be to have 'Derby Talk' just above the shield, or 'Derby' above the shield and 'Talk' below the shield. I also agree with Darin that the exhaust pipes look out of place and that the car should look a little less like a real formula one...

Re: Helped my neighbor's son build a faster car

Scott, When it comes to the kids.. I like the simple but fast car designs that are not to much for them to take on for there project. For myself.. well I like tinker with the designs and the details and I realize that the cars and truck designs that I share here on Derby Talk from time to time may ...

Re: Helped my neighbor's son build a faster car

Looks Nice and best of luck tonight! I guess I get to learn more...I thought that the cubes were 1/4oz each. How can one have 23 1/4oz weights in a 5oz car? Gtdhw, 24 tungsten cubes equals 4.0 oz. Everyone's weighting goal for a fast and stable car is rear-mounted weight equivalent to 24 cubes (4 o...

Re: Wheels Suck!

For what it's worth, I've never tested a wheel for run out. I just grab 3 wheels from the same mold number and use them without any testing what so ever. We've never lost a race at the pack or district level, so I doubt we are just "lucky". I suspect the other methods we employ overcome a...

Re: Axles or Wheels?

:welcome: Agreed. If you're using the nails/axles, right out of the box, get a small file, and file off the rough spots at the base of the nail, close to the nailhead. Then, file down the underside of the nail head, where there's additional rough areas to smooth down. The wheels are okay, as-is. Use...
