Re: 8" length limit - no typo
I think this depends on whether or not you are allowed to move your rear axles further back on the car and if your design has the ability to alter the weight placement? If so, hopefully your district organizers are confident that extending the wheel base for an 8" car will properly stage behind...

Re: SHAC 2011 MegaDerby
Saw this rule at the MegaDerby site: 2. The body of the car must be made of 75% or more from the Pine wood block contained in an approved Pinewood Derby Kit Does that mean the car has to be made from at least 75% of the wood block or that 75% of the car has to contain wood from the block? In either ...

Re: Wheel Installation Q's
If you are having to use a hammer to get the nails into a #44 drilled hole, it might be that the hole is not drilled deep enough into the wood. This happens with a lot of kids at my workshops where they can't pinch the credit card against the side of the car because they can't push the wheel/axle in...

Re: Elevating the Track?
You have a risk of damage to cars from falling off (either in the middle of the race, or at the end of the track) I think this would be my primary reason why I wouldn't want to elevate the track. If a car jumped the track and managed to make it off the table, it would be pretty much devastated when...

Re: "Un" limited wheel possibilities?
You can even flip the front raised wheel. Another great idea, that hadn't occurred to me! Thanks so much!! That's what I was looking at. The dilemma is leaving the hub and then trying to get the rail rider effect, or remove the hub and go for a straight alignment. Either way, definitely leave the h...

Re: New Pack Build Rules.
Our pack tried to impose this same rule the first year I was with them. Apparently parents were complaining that there was "to much Dad" in the cars, so a "build only at a workshop" rule was addressed. Unfortunately, like dna1990 stated earlier, it's a "knee jerk reaction&qu...

Re: 2011 Pack races, the Good, Bad & Ugly
Dad saw how we were teaching the kids about their cars, CM, wheelbase etc... as we inspected and registered. Dad actually apologized, no hard feelings, we shook hands. Kid had a great time with a terrible car. "Ugly" is in the eye of the beholder. You accomplished something that most Derb...

Re: Are you ridiculed on the track? Looked at, and suspected
My cub does everything he can on the car, but some things like just pressing down the nozzle on a full size can of spray paint are hard for him. So he holds the can while I spray. My son had the same problem. To fix this at our workshops, we bought a couple of those trigger handles that fit over th...

Re: Test & Tune Night
We have the opportunity at our Pack to set up the track the night before. Since we got to be there anyways to setup the track and make sure everything is running correctly, we make that our Test & Tune night. Like Graceman, we only allow one car on the track at a time, with no head to head racin...

Re: so why do we do it?
My story started when my son was a Tiger in Cub Scouts six years ago. I've always been a bit of hobbyist, building and painting plastic models, of all sorts of things. When my son got his first Pinewood Derby kit, I thought to myself, "this should be easy". That was my first big mistake. I...

Re: Our 2011 Cars
Nice job on the razor wheels! Setting it to rail ride is going to make it move a full inch over towards the next lane, let us know if it interferes with any of the other cars during the race. It'll be good information to know.

Re: Race Drama & Help Identifying Lube?
Home Depot used to sell one simular to that found in their key making area. The tube was more like 1/2" wide, but longer, with the same tip. We used to use them at our Pinewood Derbies, but found that the plastic tube would crack after a lot of squeezing. Once it cracked, graphite would literal...
