Re: Rail Riding drifting wrong direction

Yes, do please keep us all updated on how the race went. If you can post some pics. of the car, that might help others who come visit the site as well.

Good luck at the race!

Re: Dawes Family Cars for 2016

Love the Pac-Man car!!

Yes, your wife's car is appropriately named, considering all of the cars you've got listed. :)

We look forward to returning to the M.A. this year after a two year hiatus.

Good luck!

Re: Rail Riding drifting wrong direction

I used Pinewood Pro PRO Axle Driller to drill the axle holes with a clamp. I didn't narrow the car 1/16" anywhere nor did I bend any axles. However I think the axles may not be perfectly straight due to my polishing or something. I had to hammer the nails in to the hole such that I don't know ...

Re: Rail Riding drifting wrong direction

I think we ended up building one of those once, also quite by accident. As I recall, that car ran really well with the raised wheel doing the rail riding (I think it won a speed trophy). I do not recommend that approach (fix it if you can), but if you cannot not, it's a lesson learned, and If other ...

Re: various questions

An old credit card or library card or grocery store loyalty card makes for a good spacer. I've also heard the rounded lid to a tub of margarine works well.

Re: various questions

I checked the detailed rules and it says: "Axle nails must be mounted parallel to the track surface. Tilted or canted axles that cause the car to run on the edge of the wheels are not allowed. Wheels must run flat on the track surface. At least three wheels must be in contact with the track su...

Re: First attempt....

I do not like the raised drill hole on the new tool. That location would definitely cause us problems in ensuring adequate clearance when the Pack whips out their homemade clearance tool. We just bought a new one of those at our local Scout shop last month, and the hole locations are down low, just ...

Re: First attempt....

That's a nice looking spoon-style design. Very thin, and the weight pockets and drill holes are very well done. How do you cut your weight pockets that precise? The wood looks like something other than pine, but that could just be my old eyes. Your maxed out extended wheelbase is very similar to wha...

Re: Helping out a new generation

If you have access to a drill press, you can drill canted axle holes using nothing much more than a 3/32 metal rod strategically taped to your wooden block. Our cars got faster and more consistent in how they ran when we stopped trying to manually bend axles, and just started drilling canted axle ho...

Re: Helping out a new generation

Hey there, :welcome: First of all, good for you for helping younger boys with their car builds! Looks like you've got some fundamental build steps figured out, or are in the process of figuring them out. While you might have attempted the same techniques during the construction of the three cars, it...

Cool boxes. Good luck!

And all other things being equal, more weight in the rear (.5 oz) will win every time.
