Re: Toe-in question
I've used the hands-over-hands technique before I had heard of Derby Talk, even if I didn't use that terminology. When my older son was a Wolf, one of the first projects we did involved learning what hammering a nail was like. I guided his hand so he could get the feel for it, then backed off and le...

Re: Thanks! We placed 4th!
I like the car a lot! It's a neat way to strike up a conversation. If a wheel falls off, you'll have to use a spare. I'd better stop these puns, so I'll split. I'll show it to my 8 year old Cub Scout. One of his other interests is bowling (currently a 76 average) and he has that tomo...

Re: Toe-in question
Thank you very much FS for pointing it out to me! I'm using inputs of (6 feet - 7 inches) = 65 inches for the given board 4 inches of drift My board has about 42 inches of movement (49 inches of space - 7 inches) The car must use the slots, so I left the 4.375 for the wheelbase It calculated a drift...

Re: coarse or fine graphite
No grand finals. Times only. All four runs are averaged. They don't drop the lowest one or anything fancy. I use MaxV's graphite. I think it is a large flake variety, but he would be the one to have a definitive answer on that. I've heard good things about Hob-E-Lube but haven't heard one way or the...

Re: coarse or fine graphite
If you are in the Bushy Run District, your son's car will run 4 times only--once in each lane. They've had the same track for the previous 4 years and believe they will again this year. It's a 42 foot Best Track.

Re: Would you try to rail ride on a wooden track?
Yes, you can rail ride on a wooden track. My sons have won or come in 2nd in the Pack every year they've tried rail riding, including my younger son that came in 2nd last year as a Wolf competing against Wolves through Webelos IIs. From what I've read elsewhere here, I get the impression that you ne...

Re: Toe-in question
So, maybe about 1.5 inches over 3.5 feet? Maybe that would end up being a little bit more than 3 inches over 6 feet? I'm not sure how the number of inches over corresponds at the different lengths. I'll have to dust off my math book and do some calculations on arcs and tangents and perpendiculars. W...

Re: The Final Pack Pinewood Derby
Congratulations on your son's pack win! My son won his pack, too, and will compete against yours this Saturday. Your son set the bar last year for my son to try to beat this year, as my son finished 2nd to yours. I wish I had joined Derby Talk earlier, as we could have met at our pack's Pinewood Der...

Re: Toe-in question
Thanks. We'll set it to that.
Would it get squirrley and wiggle if it were set to less, at least at that distance?

Toe-in question
I've been visiting DerbyTalk for awhile, and finally decided to join. I've learned a LOT in the time I've spent online here. My boys have, too! Thanks to everyone that has helped us in the past. My younger son did well at his pack race this past Saturday (won 1st :D ) and he wants to tune it for dis...
