Re: Any recommendations for car design? Help appreciated...

OR, glue toothpick in your existing DFW hole then redrill higher when cured. This is better anyways as the car will sit more level instead of front high.

Re: Any recommendations for car design? Help appreciated...

Davet- 8 degrees on the DFW? Most recommendations I've seen is 1.5 and some 2? What is the benefit of such an extreme bend? And isn't that ridiculously hard to get the drift tuned in properly? We went with 2 degrees on the DFW this year just because our bender was incremented that way and it was in...

Re: What is your “real job”?

Patrol officer in large city. Secondary jobs on the department are Pursuit and Non-Emergency driving instructor, Field Training Officer and FTO Instructor. I wasn't as successful as BlackLotus on 1st page is. That was a, now hilarious, disaster 26 yrs ago :idk: . 20 yrs ago I bought an old 1956 CJ-5...

Re: Any recommendations for car design? Help appreciated...

We use Kodak premium photo paper, glossy. It shouldn't matter if glossy or not because you'll be clear coating it afterwards. Test your clearcoat on a test pic before you do anything else just to make sure it doesn't cause the ink to run. We used Rustoleum, glossy clear from Menards. -We had an airc...

Re: Opinions of the group

I hear you. It seems your situation mirrors what we've encountered at Districts and I'm sure hundreds others around the country. It is a tough decision as to whether to say anything and if you do, how to do it without upsetting anyone. I agree, though, that when something is wrong, you may be bringin...

Re: Opinions of the group

After re-reading your initial post I see another observation you had about the fast kid now being much faster than in the past. When we ran our Pack races our car was not as aggressive as it could be. If we qualified for Districts we got more aggressive with weighting and even removed more wood from...

Re: Opinions of the group

Fast cars can happen. The adult should help the kid build the car. We set track record with a 2.90 at our District last year with LED lights on a 42' Best Track and took 1st at NSC Council race. A couple days after the District race I send an e-mail to the coordinator making a few check-in suggestio...

After epoxying the plywood to the bottom we cut out the rear weight pockets 1/4" deep and epoxy in the 12 cubes. We let it cure then cut out the front weight pocket 1/4" deep and glue those 6 cubes in. We then cut the center down 1/4" deep from the bottom also. Next we belt sand the t...

Re: Any recommendations for car design? Help appreciated...

We cut our block down to 3/8" thick or so then drill our holes. We then epoxy 1/64" plywood to the bottom with the grain opposite the block grain. We then router out our center section and weight pockets 1/4" deep. We finish by running the top on a belt sander until the whole thing 1/...

Perfectly timed as I'm now looking into these. I'll have to re-read this thread and really study your pics to get a handle on this. Thanks.

Thanks guys. This is the kind of detailed info I need. I'm afraid of kids not not getting cars finished in time.

Re: workshop layout questions

I was considering taking a bunch of blocks and cutting them into about 6 different shapes. I would take maybe 3 blocks and cut them into 6 wedges. I'd leave a few blocks uncut and the kids could choose from any shape they wanted. This would limit the amount of use the bandsaw would get because only ...

workshop layout questions

I'll be running a workshop for our first-ever church pinewood derby. I think we'll have to limit the number of kids building to around 30. I've been reading a ton of old posts and getting great info but have some questions. 1) Do you recommend a couple 3-4 hr build days vs more days with less hours?...
