Re: cab-over semi
Sorry guys. Photobucket is telling me to upgrade to a $399.99/yr plan in order to 3rd party host my pics. You'll have to imagine the pic instead.

cab-over semi
This started as just a front-heavy, wind pusher to ensure it wasn't faster than any of the cars the kids built at our workshop. It morphed into this ladder framed, hollowed out balsa cab with a COM of .625". Now what do I do with it? I can't race the kids' cars from our workshop, it would possi...

Re: moral/ethics dilemma
I like that Darin. We have 3 speed trophies for each class. I've decided not to be the guy that operates the workshops and organizes the race and then have the fastest car.

Re: moral/ethics dilemma
No. We had no idea how many racers we would get and I didn't want to end up with more trophies than racers. We have around 28 Builder Class cars built at church, all ages. We have around 8 Open Class carsthat can be built at either church or at home using NSC rules, all ages.

moral/ethics dilemma
My church asked me to put on a pinewood derby event at our church. My son had good success in scouts so I was happy to do it. I've never put on an event before but we've had 2 of our 3 workshops now and the race is in 2 weeks. I pre-cut many wedges for the kids to choose if they didn't want to cut a...

Re: Maximum Velocity kits
In working more with these kits I've noticed one thing. The hub does not extend out beyond the back edge of the wheel as far as BSA wheels. Because of this you have to be careful of 2 things: 1) When setting steer on the DFW you have to make sure the leading edge of the wheel doesn't contact the blo...

Re: Maximum Velocity kits
I had an old guy moment today while packing up the blocks I prepped for our church race. I finished cutting them into wedges and counted up a total of 31 blocks even though I had ordered 36. I counted up my wheels and axles and was a few sets short of wheels also. I searched everywhere for the missi...

Re: Maximum Velocity kits
Thank you Sir. Unfortunately I had to order them yesterday to get them in time for next weekend's workshop. I'll keep this info in mind for next year if we do it again. I'll check the newsletter and hopefully they'll have a similar deal.

Maximum Velocity kits
I recently bought a bunch of MaxV kits for an upcoming church event we're having. I've never used them before or even seen them before. We bought them because they're much cheaper than BSA kits. The axle -to -bore clearance is much tighter than the BSA. The wheels are actually round. The axles have ...

Re: Stock wheelbase cars
Oct 7, 14 and an optional day on the 21st depending on how many racers we get. The car in my avatar is a photopaper project. It's easy and clean when done at the right point in the build process. I'm using your duct tape idea to save us from paint globs and smell. I'll try to get a pic on here of th...

Re: Stock wheelbase cars
I'm going to have them polish axles with metal polish just to give them something fun to do with a drill and see how they shine up. INstant gratification.
I'm going to have some duct tape but also will be printing off images onto photo paper that they can glue on if they want.

Re: Stock wheelbase cars
THx Speedster. Great info as u usually give me. My wedges are cut diagonally, corner to corner but 1/8" from the actual corner so the fronts have 1/8" bumper. I see how u got ur low COM with fewer pennies behind the axle by shaving the wedge much thinner than ours. I'll have to go look at ...

How do these numbers look?
I'm cutting cars for a church workshop. I'm using the stock axle slots and pennies for weights. I've never built a car with stock rear slot location and have a question. I get 25 pennies (2.30 oz) behind the rear slot in our wedge cars. This gives me a COM of .9251 which seems safe to me. Do I need ...
