Re: Pinewood Derby Car Designer

I saw that HolyCross2009 had it in his 08-09 DRAFT of rulebook post
viewtopic.php?p=38028

I have printed all of the plans for use in our PWD workshop. I think it would be a useful tool for the scouts to see a car they may want to build, in color, before they build it.

Re: Software for creating Templates?

I personally use Microsoft Visio Professional. I think that you should be looking for some sort of cheap CAD style program. I think most drawing programs cannot do scale drawings so they cannot print in scale (with pinewood derby you can draw and print in a 1:1 scale) I am lucky I use Visio at work,...

Re: Really bad paint job

To me it looks like someone painted lacquer paint over enamel primer. The lacquer is lifting the underlying primer from its base (I am NOT a painter but have a friend who is). If you purchase sandable primer it is usually lacquer primer (you can paint virtually any paint over lacquer primer but you ...

Re: "Recessed" wheels

Bubba, thanks for the kind words on our cars. We have always used pine as I do not like working with balsa (if you make any small mistake with balsa it is hard to fix). With pine is sands well and holds paint well and if someone touches it with their fingernail it still looks good (with balsa it wou...

Re: Using PWD for Cub Scout recruitment

We had extended an invite for each boy to bring a friend to our derby (on January 12th) to view the derby and have pizza. I don't think we had many join us for this event. Maybe it is because it was because the event was in January (and nobody wants to leave the house on the weekends in January, in ...

Using PWD for Cub Scout recruitment

Our council decided we should do spring recruitment for Cub Scouts. So earlier this month (April 2008) at our committee meeting it was decided (by the 4 to 6 regulars that are always present for the meeting) to use our new track for recruiting new scouts at one of our sponsor school’s pizza night. P...

Re: District Finals!

derbyspeed,

The Marlin has always been run forward, the COM is about 1 1/4" the fenders are made of pine. Most of the front pine has been removed to move the weight back. (see car building post here)

Re: Derby Talk offline recently

Yea, I think I might have a problem. Yesterday I was wandering the net to get my pinewood fix, I tried PDDR, DerbyWorx, etc.. but it just wasn't the same. I too kept trying back to see if DerbyTalk was back up. I am glad it is working again, and congrats on the 20 yrs.

Re: District Finals!

Thanks for the compliments on our car. No ours was definitely faster than the black one. It seems I misread the posted results (it shows all the racers in order of finish, we were in 18th place and the black car was in 32nd place). So I am not sure what place we ended up with (out of 19 cars). Here ...

District Finals!

First off, we have never built our cars to be the fastest cars, we build them to look good, and then to be somewhat fast. That is usually enough to get a trophy and move on to districts (in our pack). This year we built a 1966 AMC Marlin (see post here) . With all of the other race preparation we we...

Re: My new Mach 5

Excellent job on the Mach 5. It just needs wheels. Paint and decals look terrific! You really got it smoothed out from the in progress pictures. Just an idea on the digital camera, if it has a zoom, zoom it all the way in and stand back further then the camera may focus better. Try it it may help. A...

Re: Other 2008 cars-parent cars Lincoln Continental & Do

The primer is Plasti-Kote sandable primer http://www.plasti-kote.com/plastikote/auto/template.jsp?searchcode=PRI&product=SandablePrimer it dries quick and can be sanded smooth. I think any sandable primer would work to fill in small imperfections on the pine body. Then the primer is sanded smoot...

Re: Other 2008 cars-parent cars Lincoln Continental & Do

The plans were drawn using Microsoft Visio http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/visio/default.aspx it is great when you need a drawing that you may have to rescale, it also has layers so you can display only the information you need. And it is way easier to use than AutoCAD (but not as versatile, I use...

2008 Space Derby

For this years “other” derby our pack had Space Derby. https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1dWAJu6bA5yYbSJRkeGvJD38LgKqMzDty When we learned we would be running a Space Derby I wanted to make it more fun than the last Space Derby we attended (when he was a Tiger). The other Space Derby was not very organ...
