Re: Mowin' Down the Competition
Thanks! Yes I am kind of partial the steering wheel, I didn't have anything to put on it so I thought I would try and cut the tread off of and old wheel with the band saw and it worked fairly well, just put a little glue on the end of an axle and installed. The hood is made out of balsa wood, was mu...

Mowin' Down the Competition
Here is a fun build that I put together for my former employer so they could race in the business race at the Scout Derby. It ended up taking 2nd place in the races, they didn't have best of show :( http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn187/derbyspeed/IMG_6220.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...

Re: Post Race Survey
This is definitely an excellent survey/topic. Having a post race survey allows everyone to be involved and would do nothing but improve the event for next year if handled correctly. I often hear volunteers say, if they don't like it they can volunteer next year. That seems like a one sided approach ...

Re: building old style car (detachable axles) railrider?
Now how did I miss this post? :idk: derbyspeed, I like your vintage style racers. :bigups: Like you I find them fun to build. You had some good run times shown as well, The kids in are pack thought it would be fun to build and race a vintage style racer for the 100th anniv to Scouting. In Memory of...

Re: Where to buy supplies
I actually used a shepherds hook that I had laying around for my axles, they worked perfectly with the wheels I purchased from Big R. I cut the rod from the shepherds hook in two peices for the front axle so I wouldn't have to offset the pivot bolt. I used U-Bolts to hold the axle rod in place, most...

Re: Last minute shut-down
The race is Friday night, and we take first and second place (my youngest took first). It is real obvious that the winners are brothers once unofficial results are posted, and then people start asking questions, etc (didn't take long). The race supervisors ask me for confirmation of the terms of en...

Re: Oil / Speed improved tips.
Wow, that's impressive speed gains 5J, what was your treatment on the slower car? Curious if it's similar to 4) below, or the compare is against some other method. I assume your post was for me. On the slower car I only used Meguires Plastix with graphite and didn't use sporty's bore prep procedure...

Re: Oil / Speed improved tips.
one good drop at the wheel bore. Run spread evenly in bore with a clean pipe cleaner. Couple this process with Sporty's axle and bore prep and you will be FAST. :D I did this process, although I just applied the liquid glass to a clean pipe cleaner in drill to coat the bore, warmed it under a readi...

Re: Oil / Speed improved tips.
Hi, how do you add the liquid glass to the wheel bore? Is it just dripped in, or do you apply it on a brish, pipecleaner?? Thanks!! one good drop at the wheel bore. Re: Throwing out the worst time?
This is the nature of "computerization". Introducing computerization into a high profile event (like a council derby) is scary! You haven't begun to learn all the things that can go wrong! There are preparations that will minimize the likelihood of anomalies, though, and I'm sure you have...

Re: Throwing out the worst time?
These adapters should come with a CD with the drivers on it. Often it is a mini CD hidden in the packaging for the adapter. Too often that CD is misplaced. It does help to know who the manufacturer for the adapter is, so you can go to their website and download the latest drivers. That is especiall...

Re: Throwing out the worst time?
I got to the point where I needed the software for the USB to Serial Port adapter, I am assuming the computer I was using didn't have this software installed. This was an IBM computer. I hooked up my personal computer and it even told me what kind of timer I was connected to and I was very happy to ...

Re: Throwing out the worst time?
We started out the day where both computers wouldn't read the timers on the tracks, never did figure out why, but was able to get two other computers to read them just in time. :whew: The software's help file has some very good troubleshooting information. Support -> Troubleshooting -> Serial Port ...

Re: Throwing out the worst time?
But I am thinking now I could've written down all the times from the heat, opened up the test run area in the software and ran the single car down the same lane and written down that time and then went back to the heat and input all the times back in manually. ... I am assuming I can do that with G...
