Re: Pseudo Fiber Glass Car
Our rules just state that "the majority of the car body must be made from the wood block that comes from the kit." Therefore, I would be A-Okay with somebody checking in a car made from a composite shape molded from 51% pinewood block dust, and 49% 'other' material. And if you're making a ...

Re: 3D Printed Mustang
Pretty cool. However, it just isn't the same as working the wood to build a car. It's very cool. And it's the technology that will revolutionize customized production. Anyone ever shove a pine block into a 5-axis CNC machine? It's cool for sure. It's got nothing to do with building a Pinewood Derby...

Re: 3D Printed Mustang
3D printed car accessories like engine blowers, exhaust pipes, drivers with steering wheels? Yes. Car body superstructures like this (similar to Drag Racing Funny Cars)? No. There's another thread on fiberglass car bodies which I would also be against for the same reason, though I think the author o...

Yep, definitely a novel way to raise Pack funds. Well heeled parents, or companies as likely targets. I'm not at all surprised this would succeed.

Re: RACE RESULTS ADDED - Helped my neighbor's son build a faster car
Terrific! And whats better I see more help from now until his Web 2 year :) Noskills Too funny! Yes, I suspect he'll be coming back around next year as well. I'm seriously considering conducting a Pinewood Derby 'build school' for the Pack next year, just to show them how to make faster cars. I thi...

Re: Grooves in wheel bores?
Are wheels that have had the tread thinned, all but a thin ridge, faster than full tread/contact wheels purely on rotating mass reduction? Or does the thin contact patch add as well? (I so wish I had a test track) Edited for clarity Now you've got my wheels spinning (in my head :scratching: ). Your...

Re: Pseudo Fiber Glass Car
Interesting to see different types of composites used to build car body shapes. Since it's not made of pine wood, then I presume they'd never be used for Pinewood Derby racing, except as some sort of body trim to supplement wood car bodies, unless some Pack had rules for building and racing cars out...

Re: 2016 line up
Wow... I really like those car designs, and LOVE the painting, striping, and gloss coat. I'm pretty surprised you got your blue wedge car (great design) to 11 grams with what appears to be a lot of wood still left on the car. Is that Pine?? Could the paint cracking be due to the application of addit...

Re: Grooves in wheel bores?
Okay, I see the patent, but I'm still not buying it. There are no empirically derived facts in the patent document that point to a measurable performance improvement. Reduced bore surface area doesn't reduce any amount of friction as it only transfers the static weight of the car onto the ridged sur...

Re: weight advice---pic
Davet, I may be wrong, but I don't think there's a specific measure or formula (at least not to my knowledge) when it comes to the optimal location of weight vertically at the axle line. I can say that most positive experiences that I've read about on this forum (with regard to vertical weight locat...

Re: weight advice---pic
You're not going to pop a 'wheelie' with that extended wheelbase. Wheelies are more a function of too much weight behind the rear axles, versus weight residing underneath the rear axles.
But I understand your posit, and will let Stan speak to that one.
