Re: Finalizing my car - 3 questions for the PWD masters

- I won't try to drill angled holes without a precision drill jig. I've found attempting to do so on my drill press table is too janky. Something like the original Block from Jewkes would probably let you do this, but I don't trust the squareness of a typical block on its own. If I didn't have a pr...

Re: Finalizing my car - 3 questions for the PWD masters

I'm just gonna throw out my opinions here on how I approach things. I'm not claiming any of them is best: - We usually set our wheelbase between 4.75 and 5, depending on how rough we expect the track to be (longer for rougher). - I won't try to drill angled holes without a precision drill jig. I've ...

Re: wheel wax

I've never personally used Jig-a-Loo myself, seeing as it how it's only sold in Canada, but the conventional wisdom has been that it's not safe for bores. Maybe that's overblown, as long as you let the propellant evaporate? I couldn't really say. I think, though, were I in your shoes, I would stick...

Re: wheel wax

I’m not sure what Vitamin K will recommend but he is a smarter builder than I. Don't believe these lies. :D I believe the Novis is to simply polish the bore. After polishing the bores, and front and rear hub faces, I cleaned them out with 91% alcohol and let them dry. Then I polished them with Red ...

Re: wheel wax

For graphite, I don't know that a wheel wax is terribly important. If you're using graphite, I would just burnish it into the bores with a polished metal rod and leave it at that. For oil, you want some kind of oil-phobic coating on the bores (as I'm sure you know), but I've never heard of anybody ...

Re: Wheel Identification?

That is an old-style "Shape-and-Race" kit, used by Christian Service Brigade for their cars.

The newer wheels are lighter, but the kits use the same axles.

Gotta be honest, I am not super-impressed by the quality of the newer wheels, either...

Re: Making BSA Stock Grooved Axles

These are so clean, so pretty.

We don't actually remove the crimp marks anymore on our axles (well, we haven't run BSA kits in a while), but I do love the way these look.

Re: Hidden-Wheel Car?

Well, I hit a fatal flaw in my design, in that I totally somehow didn't register that having curved pieces around the wheels was going to be a no-go, because the top needs to drop down over the wheels from above. Duh. Well, I'm gonna have to scrap this build for now, because our race is on Saturday....

Re: French Fries anyone !

I wish the wheel truing and shaving would have went a little better however.. ( I forgot to sharpen the blade up) I put a new blade in that I had stuck away.. I'm going to try reworking the wheels to see if i can get the run out down some more.. I'm happy at 3 thousands out but 2 thousands out woul...

This is so awesome. Love it.

I really have a soft spot for hand-brushed acrylic paint jobs.
