Re: People's choice voting

Zebracar wrote: Tue Feb 19, 2019 3:01 pmMy question is this. Does anyone have any ideas how to stream line the voting process.
We've always had independent judges choose the award recipients sometime between registration and the race itself.

Re: Semi truck with a Lowboy trailer build.

Looking good!

And I can definitely sympathize with the need to rebuild a car to get it to comply with the rules so it can race.

gpraceman wrote: Sat Feb 09, 2019 12:06 amVery poor rule. It penalizes novice racers. Slap 4 wheels on a car and invariably one will not touch. We should make it easier for novice racers to build a car, not harder.

Re: New guy & Access in a Ladder/Hollow design Q.

For my illuminated designs, I've provided access to the battery by building the car in two parts. The "frame" is a slab cut from the original block in the kit. The "body" is whatever decorative structure I've built that attaches to that frame. When I build a separate body, I usua...

Re: Theme Race

However, if the picture shows the total amount of awards given for the Design competition, I suspect there will be some resistance. Ah, I hadn't noticed that. Yeah, we make a point of awarding at least as many design awards as race awards. I would think that that would be even more important in a d...

Re: Pinewood Derby Times, Volume 18, Issue 10 - February 6, 2019

The humor column reminds me of my wife's experience coming to California for college. After growing up mostly in the Portland Oregon area, she was looking forward to experiencing sunny California. It turned out that her freshman year was one of the wettest winters on record. Several times that year,...

Re: Theme Race

Sounds like it could be fun. However, not all themes are created equal. The example theme (Robots) is broad enough to allow a lot of creativity within the theme. But I other kid-suggested themes might not work as well. And some kids (and adults) start planning next year's car almost immediately afte...

Re: Decided to build me a rack for staging our cars.

After using it one race, I noticed that a couple cars had a rounded up front nose, allowing the car to try and slide off. Our home-made track's start gate had a similar issue. The start "pins" (really 1-inch wide aluminum bars) came up only half an inch above the track, and we were gettin...

Re: Decided to build me a rack for staging our cars.

I'd be curious how it works out in practice. Our impound racks are basically boards propped up on an incline, with the cars arranged in rows and wheel stops attached to the boards to keep the cars from rolling forward. If I were building new impound racks, then I'd use 3/4-inch thick center rails li...

Re: Pinewood Derby Times, Volume 18, Issue 9 - January 23, 2019

I especially liked the "work with them to make it practical" section of the feature article. The whole article was good, but that part in particular resonated. At our workshops, I've encouraged kids (and parents) interested in unusual designs to come to me for advice on how to turn their c...
