Re: Need rules for for District race

That is just too much PE being given up against an otherwise nearly perfect car IMHO. Another excellent point Den Leader. But just as I do not savor giving a lecture on how the electronics work, I don't want to have to give a physics lesson either. A lesson I am ill equiped to give I might add. :D ...

Re: Need rules for for District race

If the finish gate sensor is located in the same spot on the track as the starting pin, then the only real concern is with designs that extend over the top of the starting pin From a technical stand point I agree, but we also have to be aware of perception. We had a car last year with a VERY deep u...

Re: Need rules for for District race

I have been compiling some rules by looking at what others are doing. I saw this in the rules for the Allohak council race. All participants in the council’s finals will have their cars drilled, glued and mounted to a trophy after the council's finals at the Mall. They will be required to bring thes...

Re: Need rules for for District race

We had one last year that extended a good 3 inches past the start pin. As in your case, it was not an attempt to cheat just a cool design. As for Wheel base, I told the DE that I don't think it should be mentioned in the rules. Some boys will place the wheels for speed, others for looks, and most wi...

Re: A Pinewood Derby movie??? Yup!

Hmm...One thing that will be interesting is seeing how this site changes when the movie is released. DerbyTalk.com is on their links page. Right now that isn't a big deal, only pineheads are visiting the movie site anyway. But once that thing is released we could see a big influx of users here... :)...

Need rules for for District race

Ok, gang....We talk alot about having understandable rules. Now I need some. We ran "The rules in the box" last year. As we all know those are pretty unclear. I want to put together a rule set to present to the District for approval. Looks like I am the Derby Chair this year, so I already ...

Re: A Pinewood Derby movie??? Yup!

I agree, this is probably a winter release. I know it was shown at the Sacramento Film Festival this past August, so the movie is done. Its just a matter of getting someone to distribute it.

Re: Chief Tarhe Districts 2005

We have about 6 months. I think we will be OK if can line up the electronics. I like the idea of helping a Pack buy the electronics in exchange for a commitment to bring the track to that district race for X years. I don't yet have enough contacts in this district, I need to run this one past the DE...

Re: Chief Tarhe Districts 2005

My DE said that he hasn't seen any pack but ours running with electronics. I don't want any races judged by eye. He said to budget buying them if I think we can recoup the cost with the entry fee. I think that renting tracks might be cheaper, but I don't know.

Chief Tarhe Districts 2005

Hmmm....I think that I am now the Chairman for our district races this year. I was talking to our district executive the other day....I have told him in the past that I was interested in running the district derby....And he said to go ahead and start working on it. It seems the guy who was supposed ...

Re: Ebay cars

Smoothy, I don't believe there is a question about competition....It is, after all, a race. The aim is to keep the competition FAIR, without overly complicated/vague rules. That is why rules get debated so hotly here. I think all the discourse on rules that happens here is very good.

Re: How many pwd's do you run?

From a scouting perspective....The scout calendar is packed. Before the PWD our Webelos are working on their Klondike sled, and not long after the PWD its time to start looking at building a Cub mobile for the Soap box derby. Factor in parades, working on advancements, and camping, and....you get th...

Re: Ethics Question

Oh, there will be no racing at the workshop. However, The track might have a timer on it by then. My thought was, if a boy comes to multiple workshops he would be able to tell if tuning the car made it faster or slower. That might not be so good though if the boys start comparing times. On race day ...

Ethics Question

OK, this just hit me and I need some advice. I am holding some workshops this year. I made this decision after last years race when we had a couple of cars that could not get down the track. It was heart breaking for those boys. I made a promise to myself that I make sure every boy had an opportunit...
