Re: Wotamalo District 2014 just went to [junk]...

I dunno, doesn't bother me. If your car didn't win your pack, you're not gonna win the districts either, unless you have a major tune-up. Just means more slower racers to be eliminated. At the end of the day, the winners are gonna win, regardless of who else is on the track. You don't lose anything ...

Re: Creative 2014 Car Designs

Very nice! Love seeing creativity. Taking our scout den geocaching is something I'd love to arrange sometime. Those are interesting wheels. What kind of kit do you build from? I looked for an existing thread where I could post a photo, but didn't find one. So, here's a thread for photos of creative ...

Re: Bore wax, burnish, or both?

A lot of builders swear by the Silver Bullet or the Jewkes Block (same tool, different colors/names). I'm doing this years' builds with the fence/spacer method. (I have nice square block of basswood with 5/64" drill bits taped to the bottom of one side that I sit on my drill press table). I bas...

That's an awesome stand. I applaud your artistic skill.

I'm assuming the car was impounded for derby races?

Re: Proving a point

Kinda off topic, but I was surprised when I learned that tungsten had a higher density than uranium(!). Not only that, but it's got one of the highest melting points of all known metals. Probably has some effect on how expensive it is... This is funny. There are always those parents that have...

Re: Any close up footage of well-aligned car running?

There are a good number of videos, but not a lot that would walk you through how to create what I'd consider to be a competitive car at the, say, district level. I just did a quick look on you tube and there seems to be quite a few more videos than last time I looked. Would be nice to have a collect...

Re: Any close up footage of well-aligned car running?

Thanks Whoda. Seems like there could be a lot more in the way of "quality" videos for car building and tuning. Maybe I'll try making one sometime, assuming my builds turn out decently speedy this year. I don't have an axle bending tool. I plan to set up a wooden jig and go with the "h...

Any close up footage of well-aligned car running?

Does anybody have links to any good video footage of a properly-aligned rail-runner going down a track? I'd love to be able to see visually what the front and rear wheels are doing, but most of the PWD footage out there is shot from too far away to get a good look. :/

Re: DerbyTalk "In House" Race?

Haha, well, even if it happened, Randy, that doesn't mean you'd have to personally run it. Maybe just, you know, "bless" it. ;)

DerbyTalk "In House" Race?

So has the idea of having a DerbyTalk hosted Derby Race ever come up? That is, a (presumably) proxy race wherein all of the DerbyTalk regulars would send their best efforts in to somebody who has a track and is willing to run races? It's not even a semi-serious idea in my brain right now, but since ...

Re: Bottom of car, open frame slower?

Here is 5KidsRacing's page on making a "ladder" body. http://5kidsracing.webs.com/cuttingaladderbody.htm" target="_blank It is interesting to note that he sprays it with a coat of primer before covering it with vinyl. Probably helps form a better seal with the adhesive than raw w...

Re: Bottom of car, open frame slower?

Well, Gorilla Tape is a different than the glue product. You can think of it as double-thick duct-tape with a much more aggressive adhesive. I haven't gotten to the phase at which I plan to use it yet. Soon...soon..dying to get our builds done so I can share some pics. :) Will definitely report back...

Re: Bottom of car, open frame slower?

I think some folks use adhesive vinyl (the stuff you can print full-page mailing labels on) to seal the bottom. I plan to try using Gorilla Tape for our cars.

Re: Grand Prix-- Only one kid racing?

I would mobilize to see that these boys weren't left out. Set up a workshop so that they and their parents can get cars built and either do your Derby check-in on a different date than the actual races, or arrange for an officially-sanctioned "early check-in" for boys who can't be there on...
