Re: Going to districts. Need some advice.

So, two things I have questions about: 1) Do you have a copy of the rules to your son's district race? Can you link them here. The derby-experts here should be able to discern whether or not they'd disqualify bent axles (though there are ways around this, as well). 2) Regarding the 'double wishbone'...

Re: Going to districts. Need some advice.

Just a quick aside, if you're using imgur to host images (as do I), you can go to the links section of the image and select one of the bbcode options and then paste it directly into the post you're editing. Works well for me. Looks like my imgs didn't post. Here's are the links... http://imgur.com/z...

Watch this Space: Team Vitamin K Progress Pics...

So I will add to this thread as I get more progress and pictures. We've had some of my kids' regular events get cancelled due to Snowpocalypse, so hopefully that translates to more workshop time this weekend! So we're building a total of four cars: One of my son, who is a wolf scout, one for his sis...

Re: Axles

This post probably should be moved to Derby Products and Services, but I know that Maximum Velocity sells bulk BSA axles. [Mods, please edit this post if linking to a product for sale is breaking the rules] http://www.maximum-velocity.com/wheels_axles.htm#bsa" target="_blank I know this is...

Re: Positive or Negative Camber on FDW?

I haven't done testing (this year will be our second year of Derby-ing, and our first building rail-riders), but the conventional wisdom is that you want positive camber on the DFW. The reasoning for this is that since the car is tuned so that the inside of the DFW is the only thing that contacts th...

Epoxy for filling slots/holes?

Hiya chaps (and chappettes!), So this is a two-parter. First, what kind of epoxy do you guys use for "drill and fill"? Are we talking the liquid five minute stuff? Or the kind that is more like moldable putty/clay? Or something entirely different? Secondly, if drilling holes for axles, and...

Re: Single handle drill bit holder recomendation?

I'm a little confused as to what you're asking. Do you mean a guide for drilling axle holes?

Re: Wotamalo District 2014 just went to [junk]...

I dunno, doesn't bother me. If your car didn't win your pack, you're not gonna win the districts either, unless you have a major tune-up. Just means more slower racers to be eliminated. At the end of the day, the winners are gonna win, regardless of who else is on the track. You don't lose anything ...

Re: Creative 2014 Car Designs

Very nice! Love seeing creativity. Taking our scout den geocaching is something I'd love to arrange sometime. Those are interesting wheels. What kind of kit do you build from? I looked for an existing thread where I could post a photo, but didn't find one. So, here's a thread for photos of creative ...

Re: Bore wax, burnish, or both?

A lot of builders swear by the Silver Bullet or the Jewkes Block (same tool, different colors/names). I'm doing this years' builds with the fence/spacer method. (I have nice square block of basswood with 5/64" drill bits taped to the bottom of one side that I sit on my drill press table). I bas...

That's an awesome stand. I applaud your artistic skill.

I'm assuming the car was impounded for derby races?

Re: Proving a point

Kinda off topic, but I was surprised when I learned that tungsten had a higher density than uranium(!). Not only that, but it's got one of the highest melting points of all known metals. Probably has some effect on how expensive it is... This is funny. There are always those parents that have...

Re: Any close up footage of well-aligned car running?

There are a good number of videos, but not a lot that would walk you through how to create what I'd consider to be a competitive car at the, say, district level. I just did a quick look on you tube and there seems to be quite a few more videos than last time I looked. Would be nice to have a collect...

Re: Any close up footage of well-aligned car running?

Thanks Whoda. Seems like there could be a lot more in the way of "quality" videos for car building and tuning. Maybe I'll try making one sometime, assuming my builds turn out decently speedy this year. I don't have an axle bending tool. I plan to set up a wooden jig and go with the "h...
