Re: Do Rules Help?
While I do not believe rules should stop creativity, and engineering, I do think rules are definately needed. If the only way to win was either with $50+ wheels/axels and $200 worth of tools, the sport would not be very fun and would loose it's appeal. The best part right now, is that with the kit p...

Re: 1st time trying to make a rail rider
It really does not matter which wheel is the DFW, other than if the track has imperfections on one side of the rail or the other, but this should not be an issue on the Best track.

2012 pack races
My 2 boys had their pack race this weekend, and over all it went well, however it was good I was their as they needed help running GPRM, and figuring out how to get it all working. My boys both did pretty good (1st in each of their rank races), but I think that my younger sons car got put on either ...

Re: Quick Start Fronts (QSF) on pinewood derby cars prohibi
That sounds good in concept, but I would be worried about teasing or strong arming if somebody was not as fast. Some just don't care about speed, and that should be perfectly fine, however, I could see others in the den strong-arming another child to either not race or do something he does not want ...

Re: New district and council - no races
It is at Cutty's in Grimes, IA, pretty cool that they have it, boys raced 3 times last year.

Re: New district and council - no races
I actually planned to try and get at least in inter-pack race going, but without a pack to support me, it seems to be a lost cause. I tried to volunteer over and over again for the pack race, and got told in no uncertain terms that they have it taken care of and do not want help. I tried bringing up...

Re: New district and council - no races
In this case, it is Cub Scouts in general, otherwise, we would probably look at a different pack. While I will miss several parts of cub scouts, I also recognize that he is more into sports, and will be playing tackle football again in the fall, which takes up quite a bit of time all by itself.

Re: How thin of a car is ok
I am not sure how a thin front end causes more air drag as that does not make sense to me. For my 2 sons this year, both cars are completely flat - OS was 3/8" and YS was 1/4" with thin rails between the axels and behind the rears with the weights inside surrounding the rear axels. We then...

Re: New district and council - no races
I know this is an old post, but I have had no luck from either our new pack or the district in trying to get something going. I have tried to volunteer several times for our pack race and was told that they have it taken care of, and do not need help. Now last night at the den meeting we found out t...

Re: Fan car specs?
I built one pretty cheaply last year, and it was a hit with the kids, they kept wanting to see it run more. I simply pulled the 7.2v liIon battery pack from my RC car I had in basement and hooked it up to a GWS EDF-50, which can be had for less than 12 bucks at most hobby stores. That fan was nice, ...

Re: Do you hold back info locally?
I am pretty much in the same boat, while I do not have as much knowledge as many on the board, I am willing to share with anybody that has the interest, however, I usually do not start the conversation, and only typically answer if somebody asks since I find I get alot of odd looks from most people ...

Re: Where did I go wrong?
While I cannot view the pictures at the moment, since I am at work, and no expert, here is my take: Everything you suggested should work fine if you tested and made sure the rears were migrating out both ways (for a start). My guess would be that either one or both of the times that it jumped the tr...

I think for the most part they are pretty solid. You may be opening up people wondering what h, v etc cuts are and may worry people that would not even know what those mean.

Re: Why this Rule - Minimum Wheelbase
In most instances, this would not be an advantage, and would cause stability issues. One possible reason is that a very short wheelbase could potentially cause issues with the car bottoming out on the curve, it the section before or after the wheels was too long.

Re: Why this Rule - Wheels directly across from each other
There have been sites that claim that if you stagger the rear wheels, it will help when you hit bumps (like at the seams of the track), the same way as most people go over speed bumps at a bit of an angle. We tried it once, and could not get the alignment quite right, and it is against the rules in ...
