Re: Cutting your own pine blocks?

This is the nature of most pine. The lightest block I have found is 2.77 oz, and the heaviest is 6.38.

If you want lighter pine, then go for sugar pine. It tends to run quite a bit lighter than Ponderosa and other pine versions.

Re: Loose axle guides?

PineCar kits have shallow axle slots to accommodate the long rod axles. If you use a BSA block, then the slots are deeper and the axles stay in better (and the wood glue works better).

Re: Magnet in Car Fries Finish Line Electronics

I tried a small rare earth magnet on the starting pin of my freedom track, and there was no discernible attraction.

Re: New track too long?

It is a Freedom Series. 48 ft. And, BTW, seems like everyone talks about a 42' length, so I am confused. There are two main manufacturers of aluminum tracks. The Freedom Track comes in 8 foot sections, so they are 32, 40, 48, etc. The BestTrack comes in 7 foot sections, so they are 35, 42, 49, etc.

Re: AWANA kits

I tried to order wheels over the phone during the summer of 2012 and was refused. It is possible that the Awana position on this has changed. It is also possible that you can order one or two sets, but they don't sell larger quantities. I'll have to try again.

Re: First teardown and best way to get epoxy off tungsten??

The melting point of pure tungsten is over 6,000 degrees, but most tungsten sold for pinewood derby weight is "sintered", meaning it is pressed from powder, and is not totally pure. So, the melting point is much lower (not sure of the temperature). Epoxy melts at a fairly low temperature, ...

Though 2007, we were racing in Awana, first using Awana kits, then using PineCar kits. In 2005, an outlaw race was added. From 2009 on, our kids got too old, so it is all outlaw racing.

GPRaceman couldn't say it because he is the vendor, but use Grand Prix Race Manager (GPRM). You can get it from him, or several other web vendors.

Re: AWANA kits

Vendors used to be able to buy quantities of Awana wheels for resell. But earlier this year, Awana clamped down on that, and will now only sell the wheels to official Awana clubs. I don't know the rationale for that decision, but it seems to me that all they did was reduce wheel sales.

Re: Newbie mom and daughter Awana duo with questions

The Pro-Axle Press and Pro-Rail Rider can be used to bend an Awana axle.

The warning on the Derbyworx site was in regards to using the Pro-Axle Press alone to try to straighten Awana axles. As was pointed you won't need to straighten the Awana Axles.

Re: BSA wheel diameter go/no go limits?

When I introduced the Wheel Go/No Gauge, my intent was the following: - No Wheel Modification Allowed - If the wheels may not be sanded or modified in any way, then use the 1.180 OD gauge and the .360 width gauge. - Wheel Modification Allowed - If the wheels may be sanded or lathed, then use the 1.1...
