Krytox's life span?

Post by TimInOhio »

Question: if a car is lubed with Krytox and tuned on a Saturday night (5 runs since the most recently application of Krytox), will it be OK to run in a Pinewood Derby (for a maximum of 8 runs) on the following Saturday, or should the car be re-lubed prior to the actual Pinewood Derby? Thanks.

We've been using krytox at our workshops for a few years. Some cars have been checked in (and lubed) as much as 2 weeks before the derby, and the rest have been checked in (and lubed) 3-6 days before the derby (depending on the year and the schedule for our final check-in). We haven't noticed any problems.

This is hardly a scientific study though, so if someone has better data, pay attention to it.

Tim,

Krytox will last about 4 months before you really start to see a large change in speed if the car is kept in a clean area. I have left cars sit out in the open for 2 months and not had a issues and I have had cars in storage boxes last as long as 5 months.
