Detail sanders made from scratch.
Kid's are you looking for ways you can make inexpensive sanders for your cars & sanding projects.
In the Joe, Look out for that Wasp topic :
I shared one way of making a hand sander using a scrap block by cuting notches
and rounding over the ends plus useing the notches to hold the sand paper.
There are all types of ways to make your own hand held sanders.
I'd like to share with you one way I like to make details sanders that you'll find lot's of uses for.
This will also be a project you'll need some help with and your parents will enjoy useing as well.
Here is what you will need:
Scrap wood 3/4"x 3/4" and about 8 1/2'' long , a 13/16'' dowel rod,
a compression spring that fits around the dowel rod, and some emery cloth for your sand paper belt.
For the sander I'm makeing it will be a larger one about 8 1/2'' long 3/4" wide.
To start I'll mark it at 2'' for the tip and at 7'' for the spring end.
Here is a photo of the shape.
The tip is cut to a point & the end is cut at the 7" mark.. I'll round it over after the hole is drilled.
Next you'll need to mark out the center for drilling holes for the dowl rod.
For the longer end of the sander you'll need to drill a larger hole so the dowl rod can move easy.
The dowel rod was cut to a 3 1/2'' length and glued into the rounded end with the sping sliped over it.
The longer front was drilled deeper so the spring could be compressed.
For makeing the sanding belt:
Rap the emery cloth sand paper around the sander compressing the spring.
You'll want to leave about 1" to glue the emery cloth together. (I used CA glue for this.)
About 19" of emery cloth was used to make the sanding belt for this detail sander.
Here is what the large detail sander looks like and the sanding belt can be moved as it wares out.
Here is a smaller one as well.. you can make them any size to your liking.
I use these all the time and find them to be very handy for detail sanding.

These would be great for scout work shops, or as a kit to offer.
You should contact BSA.
