Which Mothers?
There seem to be a lot of references to "Mothers" being a terrific axle polish...but a simple search reveals a lot of different Mothers products
I've seen the "Mag & Aluminum" mentioned. That would be this:
http://www.amazon.com/MOTHERS-05100-Mag ... PDKIKX0DER
And I've seen "Billet" mentioned, which would be this:
http://www.amazon.com/Mothers-05106-Bil ... ers+billet
Which is the right one?

Re: Which Mothers?
I use the Mag and Aluminum polish on our axles. I'm not sure what the difference is. Other folks use Brasso. I just bought what I could find.

Re: Which Mothers?
I guess that raises the question to be:
Mothers Mag & Aluminum
or
Mothers Billet
or
Brasso

or
Mothers Billet
or
Brasso

zippo lighter fluid.. It melted the wheel bores right down to the axles on that car! (lol!)
Cool looking car and it's one of my faves by Speedster..

Re: Which Mothers?
Tipically I think it has a .03 micron grit. (not 100% sure though Stan.)Stan Pope wrote: What is the particle size in Brasso? 1 micron? 0.1 micron? 0.01 micron???
There is a topic about brasso polish for final polish on axles..

Re: Which Mothers?
What is the current theory regarding grit step size?pwrd by tungsten wrote:Brasso is the new preferred polish...
I was under the impression that the step factor should be about 2:1. That is, if I include polishing at 2000 grit (8 micron), my prior grit should be about 1200 grit (15 micron) and my next grit should be about 4 micron, then 2, then 1... If Brasso is less than 0.1 micron, then going from 2000 grit directly to Brasso is a factor exceeding 80:1, which seems to be a really large step factor.
What am I missing?

A lot of folks seem to walk all the way up to 10,000 grit before final polish.Stan Pope wrote:What is the current theory regarding grit step size?pwrd by tungsten wrote:Brasso is the new preferred polish...

I'm just way too time-strapped for that.

Re: Which Mothers?
Reading elsewhere suggested the jump 2000 grit to Mothers or Brasso. Musta misread.pwrd by tungsten wrote:So... Brasso is a nice final polish. How you get there...
I've been working (microns)
emery paper: 30, 15,
micromesh: 8, 4, 2,
diamond paste: 1.0, 0.5, 0.25
Need one or two intermediate steps to
Brasso: 0.03-0.05 ... because ratio is around 5:1 or 8:1.
The folks who know wood seem to say skipping steps costs time (or finish!) Is finishing wood different than finishing metal?Vitamin K wrote:I'm just way too time-strapped for that....

Re: Which Mothers?
Brasso.
I don't use it much anymore.
1. I learned to make sure I cleaned axles after using.
Brasso left over residue on axles. Graphite did not seem to like it.
I often found for me. It did not polish as well or much at all. With the harder steel axles.

So...does this mean that if I'm not gonna bother to step up to 10k grit, then I probably shouldn't bother with the polishing compound at the end?Stan Pope wrote:What is the current theory regarding grit step size?pwrd by tungsten wrote:Brasso is the new preferred polish...

But in this case, my question comes from not knowing.
