2015 car Eleanor, from the 2000 movie “Gone in 60 Seconds"

Post by ah8tk »

A friend of mine has a real Eleanor, a modified 1967 Shelby GT-500. If I remember the story right, his car was #17 of 18 cars made for the movie. His was one that they did not complete because it was not needed to finish the movie. When he purchased the car it was a painted body, it did not have a motor, driveline or suspension in it. When he got it he had a fabrication shop install a 5.0 Coyote motor from a wrecked 2013 Mustang.

Here is a picture of the real car at a car show last summer:

So I created a plan for Eleanor:

The assembly started, start out with a block, add the top, cut out the weight reduction pocket. Cut out, and shape, the wheel wells, glue the sides on and trim the block.

Then it is the fun part, finding the car that is contained within the block and letting it out:

On the real car the exhaust comes out ahead of the rear tires, and there is a large rocker panel cover. To replicate this I sliced a dowel down the center on the band saw and glued it over the rocker panel.

Here it is sanded, ready for primer:

Being this car was for a friend I decided to make another for myself, or I’m seeing double again:

Then the priming and sanding portion of the program:

And then the decoration:

The driving lights were added after the race, ran out of time before the race. The axles were polished, the wheel bores were polished and waxed, and it was lubed and run down the test board. It was set to steer 3” in 4’, it was ready to race:

Eleanor only raced in the Real Street class, it took 1st place for speed and won the Most Resembling a Car trophy. Fast and pretty, that is how I like them. Pinewood Derby cars, that is.

Damn! You and your son have some skills. If you are trying to still make it fast I would suggest keeping only a small slab of the body pine wood for holding the axles and weight. Use something lighter like basswood to build out the size needed. Balsa is even lighter but is much more delicate for carving.

Dupli-Color BCC0331 Chrysler Charcoal Gray Metallic

I did not want metallic paint as the automobile metallics are often too large metallic flakes. But it is tough to find a silver that is not metallic. The Testors metallics have the smaller metallics so they look better.
