Scroll saw advice?

That's a neat idea & cool way of making your own mini scroll saw sanding blades.
Though it might be a little harder to use these homemade ones.. on scroll saw table tops
with out the large throat plates though. (Such as the Dewalt model 788 table top.)

Say you know that axle bend gauge?

What do you think of the table tilt gauge to accurately check the angles..
of a scroll or band saw table.. maybe a drill press table as well.

I'm in favor of anything that gives me more accuracy. How would this gauge be used?

You can find these tilt gauges on line or in scroll saw mags from time to time as well.

Fold the pattern on the center line so the printed sides face outward.
You can spray glue the back side of the pattern to stick together.

To use the table tilt gauge..
place it behind the tensioned blade of your scroll saw or band saw and tilt the table until the blade aligns
with the desired angle on the table tilt gauge.

Way to much flash is seen.. to see the gauge as i'm checking it for a 90.

Here is what the tilt gauge on the saw points to..
I need to adjust the pointer on the saw as you'll see it's a little off.

Hope you can see how the blade lines up with the gauge lines for a 20.

Then there is a small digital angle finder or a smart phone app as well.

Ah, simple and clever! I like it!

I never trust the angle markings on the bottom of the platform.

I get tired of bending over and trying to read the gauge under the platform as well.

Actually, I bet I could make one pretty easily. Just need to do some calculations on endpoint spacing and then connect the dots. Could make a PDF file available. Possibly something Stan would want to host on his site.

Here is an axle bend gauge I tried last year and a saw tilt gauge I made after seeing Whoda’s gauge in action:

The links are shared now... The saw tilt gauge is really an interesting, simple and accurate way of setting your table on a jig or band saw.

Andy, your tilt gauge is on a goggle drive ( can not view it.)


There is also a simple kerf-test method:
For checking that the table a blade are square for a 90.
Use a 1-3/4" thick piece of scrap wood cut 1/16"into it.
Stop the saw and spin the wood around into the back of the blade.
If the blade slips easily into the kerf, the table is square.
If not, adjust the table and re-test cut until it does.

So we had our Derby Construction workshop this past weekend. I brought both a bandsaw (borrowed from my dad) and a scrollsaw.

Anyhow, about halfway in, the bandsaw started having problems, so I had people bring stuff to me on the scrollsaw while one of the other guys tried to get things working with the bandsaw. Remarkably, I was able to make decent progress using the LB Scrollsaw Jig I'd brought, and a 10 TPI blade.

Best moment was when somebody brought me one of Nitro Dan's templates that had the middle cut out from the top view. I did the edge cuts and then he thought I was done...when I took a hand drill, put a hole through the middle and then inserted the saw blade through and kept cutting. He was all, "Oh, so that's how you do that!"

I still want my own bandsaw someday, but it won't replace my scrollsaw.

For sure. If I could only have one saw tool for PWD it would either be scroll saw or a Rockwell Bladerunner. I still don't own a band saw.
